Session Read 2026-10-18: 12 of 20 Pairs Higher

This piece covers the completed daily session of 2026-10-18 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session closed; the figures below are final for that date and do not reflect any subsequent activity.

The desk classifies each session with a coarse regime label after the close. The label for 2026-10-18 is mixed. The sections below explain what the session's numbers show, what conditions that label describes, what execution costs look like against those moves, and what a single session cannot establish.

What the 2026-10-18 Session Did

Twelve of the twenty pairs closed higher on 2026-10-18, giving the session a slim majority advance. The median session change landed at +0.13%, a figure so close to flat that it offers almost no information about the direction of the typical pair. The bulk of the table sits in a narrow band on either side of zero, as the full data shows.

NEAR was the session's strongest mover at +3.08%, closing 62% of the way up its own 30-day range — the highest range-position reading among the gainers. STX was the weakest at -3.64%, despite sitting 42% up its 30-day range, meaning the session loss did not push it to a new 30-day low. The spread between those two — the dispersion figure — was 6.72 percentage points.

Range positions across the table are notably compressed toward the lower end of each pair's 30-day window. XRP, ADA, SOL, LINK, XLM, ETH, DOGE, HBAR, and SHIB all closed with range positions between 9% and 19%, meaning their 2026-10-18 closes sat close to the floor of their own recent ranges. That pattern holds even for pairs that posted positive session changes on the day. The seven-day column reinforces the picture: every single pair in the table recorded a negative 7-day return, ranging from BTC's -2.00% (7-day) to IMX's -21.25% (7-day).

Closes for the session dated 2026-10-18, from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. Sorted by the session's own change. Range position is where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day range, 0% at the low and 100% at the high.

The Mixed Regime: What It Describes

The mixed label applies when breadth is neither convincingly broad nor convincingly narrow, and when the dispersion figure is moderate rather than extreme. On 2026-10-18, 12 of 20 pairs advancing (60%) places the session just above the threshold for a broad advance, but the median change of +0.13% indicates that the advance was shallow. A broad-advance session would typically show a higher median and a larger share of pairs with meaningful positive moves; a broad-decline session would show the reverse. This session had neither.

The 6.72-percentage-point dispersion separates it from a compressed regime, where the full spread between strongest and weakest would be tighter and the median would sit closer to the middle of the pack. A dispersed regime would show a wider spread and more pairs at the extremes. The mixed label here reflects a session where a small number of pairs moved with some conviction — NEAR at +3.08%, STX at -3.64% — while the majority of the table barely stirred.

Execution Costs Against the Moves on Show

Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule. At standard retail volume tiers, taker fees run to approximately 0.60% per side as of the schedule in effect for this period, implying a round-trip cost of roughly 1.20% before spread and slippage. Maker rebates reduce that figure for resting orders, but the execution uncertainty of a resting order is its own cost.

Against that round-trip floor, the session's median move of +0.13% is not a meaningful gross return for a same-session round trip — the fee alone is an order of magnitude larger. Even the strongest mover, NEAR at +3.08% on the session, would leave a taker-in, taker-out participant with a gross margin of roughly 1.88 percentage points before slippage, assuming a perfect open-to-close execution — a condition that daily candle data does not guarantee. The weakest mover, STX at -3.64%, would have consumed the fee entirely and then some in the same framing.

Sessions where the majority of pairs move less than ±1.00% from open to close are sessions where the round-trip fee represents a large fraction of the available gross move for most of the table. The 2026-10-18 data shows that most pairs fell into that category. Only NEAR, STX, IMX, and OP posted session moves whose absolute value exceeded 2.00%.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single completed session is a sample of one. The mixed label describes what happened on 2026-10-18; it carries no predictive weight about what subsequent sessions will look like. The label is assigned after the close from the numbers that closed; it is not derived from a model that has demonstrated forward accuracy.

The concentration of range positions near the low end of 30-day windows is a description of where pairs closed relative to their own recent history on this date. It does not establish that those ranges will persist, compress, or expand. The 30-day return column shows wide variation — NEAR's +32.96% (30-day) alongside SOL's -7.73% (30-day) — which illustrates that pairs within the same session label can have arrived at that session from very different trajectories. No single session's regime label summarises those trajectories or indicates how they resolve.

The seven-day column showing negative returns for all twenty pairs is a factual description of price change over that lookback window as of the 2026-10-18 close. It is not a signal, and the consistency of that negative reading across the table does not make it more informative about direction than an inconsistent reading would be.

The 2026-10-18 session closed with a slim majority of pairs advancing, a near-flat median, and most of the table sitting in the lower portion of its own 30-day range — a combination that the desk's classification machinery labelled mixed, and that the numbers describe without further elaboration.
