Session Read 2026-09-16: 19 of 20 Pairs Higher
This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-09-16 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs on Coinbase Exchange. The table rendered alongside this piece shows close price, session change, 7-day and 30-day change, and each pair's range position — where the close sat inside its own 30-day high-low range, with 0% at the low and 100% at the high.
The session carried a broad-advance classification. That label describes what the closed candles showed; it says nothing about the session that followed.

What the Session Did
On 2026-09-16, 19 of the 20 tracked pairs closed higher than they opened. The median session change was +1.52%, and the breadth figure alone places this firmly in broad-advance territory — only HBAR closed in the red, finishing -0.50% on the session.
NEAR was the standout mover, posting a session gain of +12.17% and closing 86% of the way up its own 30-day range. That 30-day range position is notable in context: NEAR's 30-day change stood at +60.07%, meaning its close on this session was not a recovery from a depressed base but a continuation of an already elevated trajectory within that window. DOT was the second-strongest at +8.06%, though its 7-day figure of -9.20% indicates the session gain arrived against a backdrop of recent weakness.
At the other end, ATOM and ADA registered the smallest advances — +0.11% and +0.44% respectively — and both sat in the lower quarter of their 30-day ranges (21% and 29%). HBAR's -0.50% decline left it at 40% of its 30-day range. The dispersion between strongest and weakest was 12.67 percentage points, a figure wide enough that the session's internal structure was far from uniform even as the headline breadth was nearly unanimous.
Several pairs with strong 30-day gains — STX at +100.83% over 30 days, NEAR at +60.07% — nevertheless showed negative 7-day readings, suggesting the session's advance did not erase a more recent pullback for those names. The full pair-by-pair figures are in the table.

Regime and What Distinguished It
A broad-advance session is defined here by near-unanimous positive breadth — in this case 19 of 20 pairs — combined with a positive median session change. That separates it from a mixed session, where breadth is split and the median hovers near zero, and from a dispersed session, where a wide spread between gainers and laggards is the dominant feature even if most pairs closed higher.
This session carried both high breadth and meaningful dispersion (12.67 percentage points). That combination is possible because a broad advance does not require uniform magnitude — only that the majority of pairs closed up. When one pair moves +12.17% while the field clusters between roughly +0.7% and +4.7%, the breadth count is unanimous but the distribution is skewed. The regime label captures the direction; the dispersion figure captures the unevenness.
The range-position column adds texture: most pairs closed in the lower half to middle of their 30-day ranges, with BTC at 66%, ETH at 68%, and SOL at 66% being mid-to-upper exceptions. NEAR's 86% range position was the highest in the set. That several pairs with strong 30-day returns still sat below the midpoint of their ranges on this date reflects how large those ranges were, not necessarily how the session itself performed.
What These Conditions Mean for Execution Cost
On a broad-advance session with a median move of +1.52%, the relationship between round-trip cost and the available session range varies considerably by pair. For the pairs clustered near the median — LINK at +1.52%, APT at +1.45%, XRP at +1.25% — a standard maker-taker fee structure (Coinbase Advanced charges makers 0.00%–0.40% and takers 0.05%–0.60% depending on 30-day volume tier, per Coinbase's published fee schedule) can represent a material fraction of the observed move. A round trip at mid-tier rates could consume 0.50%–1.00% of notional, which is a significant share of a +1.25% session change.
For the larger movers — NEAR at +12.17%, DOT at +8.06% — the same round-trip cost is a much smaller fraction of the session range. This is the standard relationship: wider moves make fixed-cost frictions proportionally smaller. It does not indicate those moves were tradeable in advance; it describes only the arithmetic of cost against observed magnitude.
Slippage is a separate consideration. On a session where a single pair moves +12.17%, market orders placed into that move encounter a thinner ask-side book than normal, and the effective fill price diverges from the quoted mid. Limit orders avoid that slippage but introduce execution uncertainty. Neither observation is a recommendation; both are structural features of how order books behave during sharp intraday moves.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label describes what 2026-09-16's candles showed after they closed; it is not a characterisation of a trend, a regime shift, or a signal about the session that followed. Classification is retrospective by construction.
The 12.67-point dispersion figure is a description of internal spread on this date. It does not indicate that dispersion was persistent before this session or that it continued afterward. Similarly, NEAR's +12.17% session gain and its 30-day figure of +60.07% describe a completed price history; they carry no implication about subsequent sessions.
The 7-day figures for most pairs were negative even as the session itself was positive. That divergence is a factual observation about two different time windows pointing in different directions on the same date. It does not resolve into a directional inference. A session read cannot establish which window is more informative, and it does not attempt to.
Breadth of 19 out of 20 is a strong reading by this site's classification criteria. Strong breadth on one day has appeared before sessions that continued higher, before sessions that reversed, and before sessions that were flat. One data point does not distinguish between those outcomes.
The 2026-09-16 session closed with near-unanimous breadth and a dispersion figure wide enough to make the internal structure considerably more varied than the headline count suggests.
