Session Read 2026-08-04: 10 of 20 Pairs Higher

This piece covers the daily session that closed on 2026-08-04 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session is complete; the figures below describe what happened, not what is happening.

The desk classifies sessions by breadth, median move, and dispersion. Those three numbers together produce a regime label — in this case, mixed — that describes the character of the day that closed, nothing more.

What the Session Did

On 2026-08-04, exactly 10 of the 20 tracked pairs closed higher and 10 closed lower — a coin-flip split that is the defining arithmetic of a mixed session. The median session change landed at +0.30%, meaning the middle of the distribution was a very slight positive lean, even as the field was evenly divided.

DOT was the session's strongest mover at +3.95%, closing 69% up its own 30-day range. That range position is notable alongside a 7-day gain of +12.63%, though the 30-day figure remains negative at -2.73% — suggesting the recent run has recovered only a portion of a longer drawdown. STX was the weakest pair at -2.25%, sitting just 8% up its 30-day range, with a 30-day figure of -21.96% reflecting persistent pressure over the longer window.

Dispersion — the gap between strongest and weakest — came to 6.20 percentage points. That is a moderate spread: wide enough that the session was not compressed, but not so extreme as to indicate a single outlier dominating the field. The full table shows the distribution in detail. Notably, several pairs with strong 7-day figures (ADA at +19.10% over 7 days, SHIB at +7.79%) gave back little or nothing on the session itself, while others with weak 30-day trajectories — FET at -17.97%, OP at -18.35%, IMX at -19.57% — posted modest session gains, placing them in the lower half of their 30-day ranges (31%, 26%, and 17% respectively).

Range positions across the 20 pairs were broadly clustered in the lower half of their 30-day windows. XLM sat at just 2% of its range, STX at 8%, and several others below 30%. Only ADA at 86% and DOT at 69% were positioned meaningfully toward the upper end of their respective ranges.

Closes for the session dated 2026-08-04, from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. Sorted by the session's own change. Range position is where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day range, 0% at the low and 100% at the high.

Regime and What Distinguishes It

The mixed label applies when breadth is close to even — neither a broad advance (where a clear majority closes higher) nor a broad decline (where a clear majority closes lower). On 2026-08-04, the 10/10 split is the cleanest possible expression of that condition. The median at +0.30% tilts fractionally positive, but the breadth count does not support calling the session directional.

A mixed session is also distinguished from a compressed one, where dispersion is low and most pairs move together in a tight band. Here, 6.20 percentage points of dispersion between DOT and STX means individual pairs behaved quite differently from one another, even as the aggregate was balanced. It is similarly distinct from a dispersed session, which would require a more extreme spread driven by a smaller cluster of outliers pulling the tails apart. The 2026-08-04 session sits in the middle: balanced in direction, moderately spread in magnitude, with no single pair dominating the narrative.

The 30-day range positions reinforce that most of the field closed the session near the lower end of their recent trading history. That is a description of where prices sat at the close, not a statement about where they are going.

What Mixed Conditions Mean for Execution Cost

Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule. At standard retail taker rates, a round-trip (entry plus exit) on a spot pair carries a cost that is a meaningful fraction of the moves recorded on 2026-08-04. The median session change was +0.30%. A round-trip taker fee at the standard tier runs in the range of 0.40% to 0.60% of notional (0.20% per leg at the base taker rate, doubled for the round trip). That means the median mover on this session did not clear a standard round-trip taker cost.

The stronger movers present a different picture. DOT's +3.95% session change and AVAX's +1.80% are large enough that a round-trip fee represents a smaller fraction of the gross move — though slippage, spread, and the difficulty of entering and exiting at the exact open and close prices are additional frictions not captured in the candle data. For pairs sitting at 2% or 8% of their 30-day range — XLM and STX — the combination of a negative session move and a fee load compounds the cost of a round-trip.

Mixed sessions with moderate dispersion mean that cost recovery depends heavily on which pair was held and for how long. A single session is a short holding period, and the majority of pairs on 2026-08-04 moved less than 1% in either direction, leaving little margin after fees.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The mixed label describes what the 2026-08-04 close looked like; it does not characterise the market in any durable sense, and it carries no predictive content about the session that follows. Regime labels on this desk are taxonomic, not prognostic.

The 10/10 breadth split is arithmetically clean, but that cleanness is coincidental. A session with 11/9 or 9/11 breadth would carry the same mixed classification; the label covers a range of outcomes, not a precise state. Treating the label as a signal — or treating its recurrence as a pattern — would require far more sessions than one to evaluate, and even then, the classification describes what happened, not why.

The 30-day figures for several pairs show extended negative trajectories (STX at -21.96%, OP at -18.35%, FET at -17.97%). Those figures describe price history over the 30 days ending 2026-08-04. They do not establish support, accumulation, or any forward-looking condition. Similarly, ADA's 7-day gain of +19.10% is a large number over a short window; one session's data cannot say whether that move is exhausted, continuing, or reversing — those are questions the data here cannot answer.

The structural limitation of a session read is that it describes a completed day with precision and says nothing reliable about the next one.

The 2026-08-04 session closed with its field evenly split, a moderate dispersion of 6.20 percentage points, and most pairs sitting in the lower half of their 30-day ranges — a snapshot of a market that moved in different directions by different amounts on the same day.
