Session Read 2026-08-02: 20 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-08-02 across the 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs tracked by Skia Paper's session desk, sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's close, session change, 7-day and 30-day change, and where the close sat inside that pair's own 30-day high-low range.

The session carried a broad-advance classification — the strongest of the five regime labels used here. Every one of the 20 pairs closed the session higher than it opened, a condition that is worth examining carefully for what it does and does not mean.

What the Session Did

On 2026-08-02, all 20 pairs in the desk's coverage closed higher. Breadth was 20 of 20. The median session change landed at +2.31%, with ADA the strongest at +8.73% and STX the weakest at +0.29%. The gap between those two — dispersion — was 8.44 percentage points, a figure wide enough to matter for how evenly the session's energy was distributed.

ADA's session gain of +8.73% also left it sitting 78% of the way up its own 30-day range, the highest range position among the 20 pairs. Several names that gained on the session nonetheless closed in the lower third of their 30-day ranges: ATOM at 13%, IMX at 13%, XLM at 13%, and OP at 17%. That combination — a positive session change alongside a depressed range position — reflects how far those pairs had travelled downward over the prior month before Sunday's move. The 30-day figures in the table make this concrete: ATOM was down -20.56% over 30 days, FET -24.51%, OP -18.69%, and STX -19.64%, all despite closing higher on the day.

BTC's session gain of +1.17% placed it near the bottom of the field by daily move, though its range position of 40% and 30-day change of +1.57% distinguish it from the deeper-30d-drawdown names. ETH added +2.18% on the session and sat 64% up its 30-day range, while SOL gained +2.31% but remained at only 23% of its 30-day range.

Regime and What Distinguishes It

The broad-advance label is applied when breadth is near-unanimous and the median move is meaningfully positive. It sits at one end of the desk's five-label spectrum, opposite broad-decline. The neighbouring labels — mixed and dispersed — would each have required either a split in directional breadth or a dispersion figure wide enough to suggest the session was driven by pair-specific factors rather than a common bid.

On this session both conditions for broad-advance were met: every pair closed higher, and the median of +2.31% was not dragged down by a large cluster of near-zero prints. The 8.44 pp of dispersion is notable — it is not a compressed session — but the dispersion here reflects variation in the size of gains rather than a mix of gains and losses. That is a different character from a dispersed session where winners and losers diverge sharply in direction.

The contrast between the session's uniform direction and the 30-day context is also part of the regime's character. Many pairs that advanced on 2026-08-02 did so from positions deep inside their 30-day ranges, meaning the session's advance recovered only a fraction of the prior month's ground for those names.

Cost of Participation in This Kind of Session

When the median session move is +2.31%, the relationship between that move and the round-trip cost of a spot trade shifts relative to quieter sessions. Coinbase Exchange charges maker fees and taker fees that vary by 30-day volume tier; at the standard retail taker rate of 0.60% per side (1.20% round-trip as of Coinbase's published fee schedule), the median session move of +2.31% is roughly 1.9 times the round-trip cost. That ratio is more favourable than on a compressed session where the median move might sit at 0.3% or 0.4%, where the same round-trip fee would consume the entire move and more.

However, dispersion of 8.44 pp means the session's moves were not uniform. STX gained only +0.29% on the session — a move smaller than the round-trip fee at most retail tiers. For the weakest movers, the arithmetic of fees and spread does not change simply because the broader session was positive. Slippage on less-liquid pairs also widens the effective round-trip beyond the headline fee rate, particularly during rapid directional moves when market orders walk the book.

The observation here is structural: a broad-advance session raises the median move relative to costs, but the pairs at the low end of the dispersion range remain in the same cost bind as they would on any slow session.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label describes what closed on 2026-08-02; it carries no predictive content about the session that follows. The desk's classification system is a descriptive vocabulary, not a signal-generation framework. Labelling a session broad-advance does not imply the next session shares the same character, and historical base rates for label-to-label transitions are not published here because a 20-pair, single-venue sample is too narrow to support that inference reliably.

The 30-day figures visible in the table are also a caution against reading the session's breadth as a recovery confirmation. Pairs like FET (-24.51% over 30 days), ATOM (-20.56%), and STX (-19.64%) remain well below where they traded a month ago despite closing higher on the day. A single session of positive breadth does not close that gap structurally — it is one data point inside a longer sequence that the desk does not attempt to characterise.

Finally, the range-position column shows that most pairs, despite gaining on the session, closed in the lower half of their 30-day ranges. Fourteen of the 20 pairs had range positions at or below 47%. The session moved prices; it did not, on its own, reposition most pairs relative to the month's context.

The 2026-08-02 session was uniform in direction and uneven in magnitude — a combination that the broad-advance label captures at the top line but that the dispersion figure and range-position column fill in with more texture.
