Session Read: 2026-07-28 Dispersed Crypto Day

This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-07-28 across the 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs tracked by Skia Paper using Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session closed and the data is final; today's session is still open and is not described here.

The desk classified the session as dispersed — a label applied when the spread between the strongest and weakest pair is wide enough to dominate any reading of the day. The table rendered alongside this piece carries all six columns: pair, close in USD, session change, 7-day change, 30-day change, and range position within the pair's own 30-day high-to-low band.

What the Session Did

On 2026-07-28, 14 of the 20 tracked pairs closed higher, and the median session change landed at +0.54%. Those two figures describe a modestly positive centre of gravity, but the centre is not the story of this session.

ADA was the strongest pair at +4.05%, closing 35% of the way up its own 30-day range — meaning its close sat in the lower half of its recent band even after a sizeable single-day move. SHIB was the weakest at -4.55%, also closing in the lower half of its 30-day range at 32%, despite carrying a 7-day gain of +8.45% and a 30-day gain of +11.33% into the session. The distance between those two endpoints — 8.60 percentage points — is what earns the dispersed label.

Most of the 14 gainers moved modestly. ETH added +1.54% and sits at 86% of its 30-day range, the highest range position in the table. STX gained +2.83% on the session but remains at only 15% of its 30-day range, reflecting a 30-day loss of -16.68%. Several pairs — XLM, OP, ATOM, DOT — closed in single-digit range positions, indicating that even after a positive session they remain near the low end of where they have traded over the past month. BTC's session move of +0.24% was among the smallest gainers; it sits at 67% of its 30-day range.

Among the six decliners, the moves were concentrated: SHIB at -4.55%, FET at -3.20%, IMX at -2.54%, and NEAR at -2.25% accounted for most of the downside weight. SOL and APT posted smaller losses of -0.55% and -0.79% respectively.

Regime: What Dispersed Describes

A dispersed session is distinguished from a broad-advance or broad-decline by the width of the outcome distribution rather than its direction. On 2026-07-28 the breadth figure — 14 of 20 higher — would, on its own, suggest a tilt toward gains. But dispersion of 8.60 percentage points means the tails pulled hard in opposite directions, and the median of +0.54% sat far from both endpoints. That combination is the defining feature of a dispersed regime.

A compressed session would show the opposite: most pairs clustered tightly, dispersion low, and the median close to the extremes. A mixed session would typically show breadth near 10-of-20 with no clear directional lean. The 2026-07-28 session had directional lean and wide spread simultaneously, which is what separates it from both neighbours.

Range positions add texture. ETH at 86% and LINK at 74% closed near the top of their 30-day bands. ATOM at 6%, DOT at 8%, XLM at 9%, OP at 12%, FET at 3%, IMX at 7%, and NEAR at 6% closed near the bottom of theirs. That spread of range positions across the table reinforces the dispersed classification: the session did not lift or press the field uniformly.

What Dispersion Means for Execution Cost

On a dispersed day the headline moves vary enormously by pair. ADA's +4.05% session change and SHIB's -4.55% are large relative to a typical maker fee of roughly 0.00%–0.06% per side on major venues, or a taker fee in the 0.05%–0.10% range per side (Coinbase Advanced fee schedule, current tier). For those two pairs specifically, the round-trip cost was a small fraction of the session's gross move.

The picture is different at the median. A round-trip taker cost of approximately 0.10%–0.20% is not a small fraction of a +0.54% median move. Pairs that gained 0.13% (DOT), 0.23% (XRP), or 0.24% (BTC) on the session moved less than a single round-trip taker cost at standard retail tiers. Spread and slippage — which vary by pair liquidity and are not captured in daily close data — would narrow those margins further or eliminate them entirely.

Dispersed sessions therefore present an uneven cost picture: the outlier pairs generated moves large enough to absorb execution friction comfortably, while most of the field moved in a range where friction is a meaningful share of the gross session change. That is an observation about the arithmetic of the day, not a statement about any strategy's outcome.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The dispersed label describes what happened on 2026-07-28; it carries no predictive content about the session that follows. The classification system has five labels and any of them could apply to the next completed day.

The range-position figures describe where each pair's close sat relative to its own 30-day high and low as of that date. A low range position — such as ATOM at 6% or FET at 3% — means the close was near the bottom of the recent band. It does not indicate that the band will widen, contract, shift upward, or persist. The band is a backward-looking measurement.

The divergence between session and multi-week returns is also not a signal. SHIB posted the session's worst single-day move at -4.55% while carrying a 30-day gain of +11.33% and a 7-day gain of +8.45%. STX gained +2.83% on the session against a 30-day loss of -16.68%. Those contrasts are features of the data for that date; they do not indicate mean reversion, momentum continuation, or any other forward condition. The structural failure of reading a single dispersed session as evidence of anything durable is precisely that one session is too small a sample to distinguish noise from pattern.

The 2026-07-28 session closed with breadth tilted positive, a modest median, and a tail-to-tail spread of 8.60 percentage points that placed it firmly in the dispersed category — a day where the average told less of the story than the distance between the extremes.
