Session Read 2026-08-19: 20 of 20 Pairs Higher
This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-08-19 across 20 USD-quoted crypto spot pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's close, its session percentage change, its 7-day and 30-day changes, and where the close sat inside its own 30-day high-to-low range.
The session was classified broad-advance — the label that applies when every pair in the desk's universe closes above its open on the same day. That label describes what the session did; it carries no information about what any subsequent session will do.

What the Session Did
All 20 of the 20 tracked pairs closed higher on 2026-08-19. The median session change was +7.18%, meaning half the desk moved more than that and half moved less. ETH was the session's strongest mover at +17.47%, while IMX was the weakest at +2.95% — a spread of 14.53 percentage points between the two ends of the distribution. Even the weakest pair still posted a meaningful positive session change, which is what distinguishes a broad-advance from a mixed or dispersed session.
Range position — where the close sat between the pair's 30-day low (0%) and 30-day high (100%) — varied considerably. BTC closed at 91% of its 30-day range, SOL and LINK both at 89%, and ETH at 84%, all near the upper end. At the other end, STX sat at 20% of its range and FET at 29%, meaning those pairs gained on the session but remained comparatively depressed relative to their recent histories. IMX, the weakest session performer, closed at 23% of its 30-day range. The table captures the full spread; no single figure summarises the range-position picture.
The 7-day and 30-day columns in the table show that the session advance was not uniform in its longer-term context. Several pairs — including XLM (30d: -9.55%), NEAR (30d: -12.35%), STX (30d: -22.32%), and IMX (30d: -17.16%) — remained in negative territory over the 30-day window despite the session gain. Others, such as LINK (30d: +22.87%) and ETH (30d: +18.29%), were already carrying positive 30-day momentum into the day.

Regime and What Distinguishes It
A broad-advance session is defined by unanimous positive breadth — all 20 pairs closing above their session open. That is the most concentrated version of the advance regime. A mixed session would show a majority moving higher with meaningful exceptions; a compressed session would show narrow moves regardless of direction; a dispersed session would show a wide range of outcomes without a clear directional skew. The 2026-08-19 session was none of those: the floor of the distribution was still +2.95% and the breadth count was 20-of-20.
Dispersion of 14.53 percentage points — the gap between ETH at +17.47% and IMX at +2.95% — is notable within a broad-advance. It indicates that while the session tide was universal, the magnitude of individual moves varied widely. A tighter broad-advance might show all pairs clustered within a few percentage points of each other; this one did not. That spread matters for any strategy whose outcome depends on picking the stronger or weaker end of the field rather than simply being present in the market.
What These Conditions Mean for Execution Cost
On a session where the median move was +7.18% and even the weakest pair gained +2.95%, the round-trip transaction cost — typically in the range of 0.10% to 0.60% of notional for spot crypto on a major exchange, depending on fee tier and whether orders rest as maker or cross as taker — represents a smaller fraction of the observed price movement than it would on a compressed or low-volatility day. A round-trip at 0.20% is roughly 2.8% of the median session move on this day; on a day where the median move is 0.30%, that same fee is more than half the gross move.
That arithmetic does not make execution free or risk-free; it means the fee hurdle was proportionally lower relative to the moves on show. Slippage — the difference between the mid-price at decision time and the actual fill — is a separate cost that depends on order size, order type, and the depth of the book at the moment of execution, none of which are observable in a daily candle. In fast-moving sessions, bid-ask spreads can widen and book depth can thin, which can raise slippage even as the gross move appears large and inviting.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label is a description of 2026-08-19; it is not a classification of a regime that is known to persist, and it says nothing about the direction or magnitude of any subsequent session. Historically, sessions with unanimous breadth have been followed by sessions of every type — further advances, reversals, and compressed, directionless days. The label is a backward-looking summary, not a forward-looking signal.
The range-position data illustrates a specific structural limitation: pairs like STX (range position 20%) and FET (29%) gained on the session but remained near the low end of their 30-day ranges. A single strong session does not close a 30-day deficit. STX's 30-day change was -22.32% entering the close; the +6.91% session gain reduced that deficit but did not eliminate it. The gap between a session label and a trend is not a matter of implementation — it is structural. One candle cannot rewrite a 30-day price history.
Dispersion of 14.53 percentage points also means that any analysis treating the session as a single uniform event will misrepresent roughly half the desk. The pairs at the bottom of the session distribution behaved materially differently from those at the top, and no aggregate figure captures that divergence.
The 2026-08-19 session closed with unanimous positive breadth, a median gain of +7.18%, and a 14.53-percentage-point spread between the strongest and weakest pairs — a configuration that is internally consistent as a label and opaque as to what follows.
