Session Read 2026-09-14: 17 of 20 Pairs Higher
This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-09-14 on Coinbase Exchange, drawn from 20 USD-quoted crypto spot pairs. The table rendered alongside shows each pair's close, session change, 7-day and 30-day change, and where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day high-low range.
The session carried a broad-advance classification. That label describes what the data showed when the session closed; it says nothing about what any subsequent session will do.

What the Session Did
Seventeen of the twenty pairs in the panel closed higher on 2026-09-14. The median session change landed at +1.79%, and the spread between the strongest and weakest pair — dispersion — reached 9.96 percentage points. That is a wide gap for a single day, reflecting a session in which moves were not uniform across the panel.
XLM led with a session gain of +8.21%, though its 30-day range position of 56% shows it closed in the middle half of its own recent range rather than at a multi-week extreme. OP followed at +8.02% with a range position of 51%. At the other end, FET closed at -1.75% despite sitting at 61% of its 30-day range — meaning it was already in the upper portion of that range when the session opened, and it still lost ground.
The large-cap anchors moved more modestly. BTC added +1.79% on the session and sat at 79% of its 30-day range; ETH added +1.60% and sat at 81%. SOL gained +3.28% at a range position of 78%. Those three closed in the upper quartile of their own 30-day windows, a structural detail the table captures directly. NEAR's 30-day change of +52.55% was the largest on that horizon in the panel, and its range position of 74% reflects that extended run.
Three pairs declined: STX at -0.64%, ICP at -0.78%, and FET at -1.75%. All three carried negative 7-day readings as well — FET's 7-day figure was -10.79%, the weakest on that horizon across the panel.

Regime and What Distinguishes It
A broad-advance session is defined by breadth: the majority of pairs in the panel closing higher, with the median move positive. On 2026-09-14, both conditions were met — 17 of 20 pairs up and a median of +1.79%. This distinguishes the session from a mixed regime, where advances and declines are roughly balanced, and from a compressed regime, where most pairs move but the moves are small and tightly clustered.
The 9.96-percentage-point dispersion figure keeps this session from being described as uniform. In a compressed session, dispersion is low and the panel moves together in a narrow band. Here, the gap between XLM's +8.21% and FET's -1.75% is large enough that the session cannot be characterised as a tightly synchronised lift. Breadth was wide; the magnitude of individual moves varied considerably.
The 7-day column shows that for most pairs, the session gain did not reverse a positive week — the majority of 7-day figures in the table are negative, meaning the single-session advance arrived after a period of broader softness on that horizon. That is an observation about the shape of the data, not a characterisation of momentum or a signal of anything forward-looking.
Cost of Participation in These Conditions
When a session's median move is +1.79% and the strongest pair moves +8.21%, the raw session range is large relative to the typical round-trip cost of a spot trade on a major exchange. Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule; at standard retail tiers, the round-trip cost for a single trade sits in the range of roughly 0.40% to 1.20% depending on volume tier and order type. Against a median session move of +1.79%, that fee represents a meaningful fraction — between roughly 22% and 67% of the median move — before accounting for spread or slippage.
For the pairs that moved at the top of the range, such as XLM at +8.21% or OP at +8.02%, the fee is a smaller proportion of the gross move. For pairs near the bottom of the advance — DOT at +0.41%, APT at +0.29%, ATOM at +0.23% — the round-trip fee would have consumed or exceeded the session's price move entirely, assuming a trade opened at the session open and closed at the close. Those pairs cleared breadth but not cost.
Dispersion of 9.96 percentage points also implies that pair selection mattered materially on this session. A position in the median pair and a position in the weakest pair produced outcomes separated by more than 3.5 percentage points before fees. Slippage in thinner pairs can add further drag, and the table does not carry volume data, so relative liquidity across the panel cannot be assessed from the published figures alone.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label describes what the data showed on 2026-09-14; it does not describe a trend, a regime shift, or a condition that persists into subsequent sessions. Breadth of 17 of 20 is high within a single day, but one day of high breadth has no established predictive relationship with the breadth of the following session.
The 30-day figures show large positive moves for several pairs — NEAR at +52.55%, STX at +117.04%, XRP at +42.05% — but those figures describe price behaviour over a trailing window that has already closed. They do not indicate where any pair sits relative to its fair value, nor do they imply continuation or mean reversion. Range position, similarly, describes where a close fell inside a historical window. A range position of 81% means ETH closed near the top of its 30-day range on this session; it does not indicate whether that range will expand, contract, or shift.
The structural failure of reading too much into a single broad-advance session is that the classification collapses all directional information into a label. Two sessions with identical breadth figures can have entirely different dispersion profiles, different 30-day contexts, and different cost environments. The label is a compression of the data, not a substitute for it, and it carries no information about the session that follows.
The 2026-09-14 session closed with 17 of 20 pairs higher, a median gain of +1.79%, and a dispersion of 9.96 percentage points — a wide-breadth day in which the size of individual moves varied considerably across the panel.
