Session Read 2026-08-31: 20 of 20 Pairs Higher

This piece covers the Coinbase Exchange daily candle session that closed on 2026-08-31, drawn from 20 USD-quoted crypto spot pairs. The table rendered alongside this post shows each pair's close, session change, seven-day and thirty-day change, and where the close sat inside its own 30-day high-low range.

The session carried a broad-advance classification — the strongest of the five regime labels used on this desk. What that label records, and what it does not, is described in the sections below.

What the Session Did

Every one of the 20 pairs closed above its open on 2026-08-31. Breadth was 20 of 20, the maximum possible reading. The median session change landed at +2.09%, which ETH matched almost exactly at +2.09% on the day. Gains ranged from OP at +8.28% down to HBAR at +0.20%, producing a dispersion figure of 8.07 percentage points — wide enough to show that the advance was uneven even as it was universal.

The table shows the range-position column — where each close sat inside the pair's own 30-day high-low band, expressed from 0% at the 30-day low to 100% at the 30-day high. Despite the session's uniformity, range positions were spread across the full spectrum. ETH closed at 87% of its 30-day range and BTC at 85%, both near the upper end. SOL sat at 80% and STX at 78%. OP, the session's strongest mover at +8.28%, closed at only 30% of its 30-day range, meaning its large single-session gain still left it in the lower half of its recent band. APT, up +3.28% on the session, sat at just 13% — the lowest range position of the group. These figures describe where prices closed; they carry no implication about subsequent direction.

On the seven-day column, the picture was more mixed: fifteen of the 20 pairs showed negative seven-day readings even as all 20 posted session gains. STX (+9.00% over seven days) and SOL (+4.11%) were the exceptions alongside the session itself. The thirty-day column showed broader strength, with SOL at +43.35%, LINK at +40.38%, and ETH at +33.86% among the larger readings.

Closes for the session dated 2026-08-31, from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. Sorted by the session's own change. Range position is where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day range, 0% at the low and 100% at the high.

Regime and Its Neighbours

The broad-advance label is applied when breadth reaches its ceiling — all tracked pairs closing higher in the same session. It sits at one end of the regime spectrum, opposite broad-decline. The neighbouring labels are mixed (breadth split roughly even), compressed (breadth high but dispersion narrow), and dispersed (wide spread between leaders and laggards regardless of breadth).

The 2026-08-31 session was broad-advance rather than compressed because dispersion at 8.07 percentage points was substantial. A compressed session would show most pairs clustered within a narrow band of gains; here the gap between OP and HBAR was wide. It was broad-advance rather than dispersed because the floor of the range was still a gain — HBAR's +0.20% — rather than a loss that would pull breadth below the ceiling. The combination of perfect breadth and meaningful dispersion is what the label captures for this specific session.

Execution Cost in Context

Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule. At the lowest volume tier, taker fees run to 0.60% per side, making a round-trip taker cost 1.20% before spread and slippage. At higher volume tiers, fees fall, and maker orders on the same schedule carry lower rates still.

Against the session's median move of +2.09%, a round-trip taker cost at the lowest tier would consume more than half of the median gain. For the weakest mover, HBAR at +0.20%, a single round-trip taker cost at the lowest tier would exceed the session change by a factor of six. The strongest mover, OP at +8.28%, offered a wider cushion relative to fees, though spread and slippage in a thinner order book can erode that margin further than the fee schedule alone implies.

Strategies that clear round-trip costs on sessions of this size typically do so through one of three routes: high frequency (many small edges compounding), large size (where maker rebates or negotiated rates apply), or extended holding period (where the session move is a fraction of the total intended hold). A single session's data does not indicate which route, if any, applied to any particular position on 2026-08-31.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A broad-advance classification describes the session that closed on 2026-08-31. It is a label for what happened, not a characterisation of a trend, a regime shift, or a signal. One session is a sample of one, and no statistical inference about direction or persistence is warranted from it.

The seven-day column illustrates the point directly: fifteen of the 20 pairs that closed higher on the session were still negative over the prior seven days. A single session of universal gains sits inside a larger window that looked different. The range-position data reinforces this — OP's 30% range position after a +8.28% session gain shows that a strong day can coexist with a pair that remains deep in its recent range.

The regime label also has a structural ceiling as a failure mode: broad-advance can only be recorded when breadth is 20 of 20. That ceiling means the label cannot distinguish between a session where all pairs gained modestly and one where all gained substantially. Dispersion partially addresses this, but the label itself carries no magnitude information. Any reading of the broad-advance classification as a forecast of continuation, or as evidence of underlying strength, goes beyond what the data supports.

The 2026-08-31 session closed with perfect breadth and a wide dispersion — a combination that the data describes precisely and that the single session, standing alone, cannot explain.
