Session Read 2026-08-08: 16 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-08-08 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session closed before this piece was written; nothing here describes a market that is currently open.

The session earned the regime label broad-advance. The sections below explain what the table shows, what distinguishes that label from neighbouring ones, what the moves imply about execution costs, and what a single session cannot establish.

What the Session Did

Sixteen of the twenty tracked pairs closed the 2026-08-08 session higher than they opened. The median session change was +1.49%. That figure sits comfortably in positive territory and reflects a tilt in which most of the distribution moved in the same direction, rather than a handful of outliers pulling the median up.

The strongest pair was ICP at +4.76% on the session, closing 52% of the way up its own 30-day range. APT was close behind at +4.27%, sitting at 57% of its 30-day range. At the other end, ADA was the weakest, down -0.77% on the session despite sitting at 79% of its 30-day range — the highest range position of any pair in the table. The four pairs that closed lower (ADA, DOT, FET, SHIB) each recorded moves of less than one percentage point in magnitude.

Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session changes — was 5.53 percentage points (ICP's +4.76% minus ADA's -0.77%). That spread is moderate: wide enough that individual pairs behaved differently, but not so extreme as to suggest the session was driven by idiosyncratic events in one or two names alone.

Range positions across the table tell a more varied story than the session changes do. STX and NEAR both posted positive session changes (+2.79% and +1.19% respectively) yet sat at only 8% and 7% of their 30-day ranges, indicating they closed near the bottom of the past month's territory even after the session's gain. By contrast, ETH and BTC — both barely positive on the session at +0.12% and +0.03% — sat at 74% and 61% of their 30-day ranges, reflecting prior-month strength rather than Saturday's move.

Regime: What Broad-Advance Describes

A session is labelled broad-advance when a clear majority of pairs close higher and the median change is meaningfully positive. On 2026-08-08, both conditions were met: 16 of 20 pairs up, median +1.49%. The label describes the internal structure of what closed, not a characterisation of any trend beyond this one session.

The neighbouring labels help clarify the boundary. A mixed session would show roughly even breadth — roughly half up, half down — with no strong directional tilt in the median. A dispersed session would show high dispersion relative to the median, meaning the spread between the strongest and weakest pair dominates the picture rather than a shared directional move. On 2026-08-08, dispersion at 5.53 percentage points was present but not dominant relative to the breadth of 16/20 and a median of +1.49%, so broad-advance fits better than dispersed.

A compressed session, by contrast, would show very low dispersion and a median close to zero — a day where very little happened across the board. That was not 2026-08-08. The session had genuine spread across pairs and a clear directional lean in the majority.

What These Moves Mean for Execution Cost

On a broad-advance session, the relevant execution question is how the size of the moves compares to the round-trip cost of being involved. Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule; at standard retail taker rates the round-trip cost (entry plus exit) typically runs in the range of 0.40% to 1.20% depending on volume tier, before spread and slippage.

Against that floor, the session's median move of +1.49% is narrow. A position entered at the open and exited at the close on the median pair would have cleared a 0.40% round-trip with room to spare, but a 1.20% round-trip would have consumed most of the gain. The four pairs that closed lower — all within -0.77% to -0.25% of their opens — would not have cleared any standard round-trip fee on a long position, regardless of tier.

The stronger movers present a different picture. ICP at +4.76% and APT at +4.27% on the session represent moves large enough that round-trip fees become a smaller fraction of the gross move. However, those moves were only identifiable as the strongest after the session closed; slippage on entry and exit, and the bid-ask spread at the moment of execution, are not captured in daily candle data. Range position does not indicate where within the session the high or low occurred, so the candle close does not describe the full path a position would have travelled.

The general observation is that on a broad-advance session with a median of +1.49%, the cost of a round trip is a meaningful fraction of the available move for most pairs, and is the dominant factor for the weakest movers.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label is a description of 2026-08-08 specifically; it carries no implication about the session that follows it or about any pattern in the data. The classification system has five labels. On any given day, one of them must apply. The fact that broad-advance applied on this date does not make broad-advance more or less probable on subsequent dates.

The 7-day and 30-day columns in the table show a wide range of prior trajectories among pairs that all participated in the same session-level advance. STX is down -21.42% over 30 days and down -4.60% over 7 days yet closed +2.79% on the session. ADA is up +19.84% over 30 days and up +14.40% over 7 days yet was the weakest pair on the session at -0.77%. Prior-period performance and session-level direction were not aligned in any consistent way on 2026-08-08, which is itself a reminder that a session label does not summarise the condition of individual pairs.

Range position describes where a pair closed relative to its own 30-day high and low. It does not indicate where the pair is likely to close next. A range position of 7% (NEAR) is a description of a close near the 30-day low; it is not a signal that the low is near or far, or that the direction will continue or reverse. The same applies at the high end: ADA at 79% of its range closed there on a down session.

Breadth of 16/20 is notable within the session but is not a statistically robust basis for inference about anything beyond it. Market microstructure research consistently shows that short-horizon returns are dominated by noise, and a single day's breadth reading is among the weakest forms of evidence available.

The 2026-08-08 session closed with the broad-advance label intact: 16 pairs up, a median of +1.49%, and the strongest individual move at +4.76% — a session that was directionally coherent without being uniform.
