Session Read 2026-08-10: 10 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-08-10 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's close, session change, 7-day and 30-day change, and where the close sat inside that pair's own 30-day high-low range.

The session closed with a regime label of mixed: exactly 10 of the 20 pairs finished higher and 10 finished lower, the median session change landed at +0.15%, and the spread between the strongest and weakest pair reached 7.77 percentage points.

What the Session Did

ICP was the session's strongest performer at +5.39%, closing at 80% of its 30-day range — near the upper end of the range it has occupied over the past month. OP followed at +4.55%, though its 30-day figure of -9.80% places that single-session gain against a backdrop of sustained softness. The remaining gainers were clustered in a narrow band: IMX at +1.64%, ATOM at +1.60%, LINK at +1.33%, and then a gradual fade toward STX and NEAR, both of which eked out just +0.15% — the exact value that also defined the median for the session.

On the declining side, moves were more compressed. APT slipped -0.07%, SOL -0.37%, and the losses widened through BTC at -1.44%, ETH at -1.98%, and ADA at -1.89%, before SHIB closed at the bottom of the field at -2.39%. SHIB's range position of 25% and its 7-day figure of -9.64% indicate it has spent recent sessions in the lower portion of its monthly band.

Range positions across the field were broadly subdued. Several pairs — STX at 3%, NEAR at 5%, XLM at 6%, XRP at 7%, and FET at 10% — closed within the bottom tenth of their respective 30-day ranges, suggesting those pairs have been trading near their monthly lows. SOL and ADA stood out on the other side, both at 64%, while ICP's 80% was the highest range position in the set.

Regime: What Mixed Describes

The mixed label is applied when breadth is neither clearly positive nor clearly negative and the session lacks the defining characteristics of the neighbouring regimes. A broad-advance or broad-decline session would show a decisive majority of pairs moving in one direction; a compressed session would show very tight dispersion regardless of direction; a dispersed session would show wide dispersion with a clearer directional tilt. On 2026-08-10, breadth split exactly 10-10, the median was only marginally positive at +0.15%, and dispersion at 7.77 percentage points was meaningful but not extreme — driven largely by ICP's outlier gain rather than by broad movement in either direction.

What distinguishes this session is the combination of a neutral headline breadth figure with a visible gap between the top performer and the rest of the field. Remove ICP's +5.39% and OP's +4.55%, and the remaining gainers were all below +2%. The decliners were similarly contained, with only SHIB breaching -2%. The session's shape was therefore one of a few active movers at the edges and a dense, quiet middle.

Cost of Participation in This Kind of Session

A standard maker fee on Coinbase Advanced Trade sits at 0.40% for lower-volume tiers, with taker fees at 0.60%; a round trip therefore carries a floor of roughly 0.80% to 1.20% in fees alone before spread or slippage is considered. Against that floor, the session's median move of +0.15% is well inside the cost of a single round trip. Even the majority of individual session changes — most of which fell between approximately -2% and +2% — leave little margin once fees are applied to a position opened and closed within the same daily candle.

The pairs that moved enough to clear the round-trip fee floor on session change alone were ICP at +5.39% and OP at +4.55% on the gaining side. On the declining side, no pair moved enough in absolute terms to have covered a round trip while also producing a net positive result from a short. For strategies that rely on holding period rather than intra-session frequency to dilute the fee load, a single session's data is not the relevant unit of measurement — the 7-day and 30-day columns in the table provide a coarser sense of how those holding windows looked for each pair as of this close.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The mixed regime label describes what the 2026-08-10 candle looked like when it closed; it carries no predictive content about the session that follows. Breadth splitting exactly 10-10 is a description of one day's arithmetic, not evidence that the market is in equilibrium or trending toward any particular state.

The range position figures describe where each pair's close sat relative to its own 30-day high and low as of this session. A range position of 3% for STX or 80% for ICP describes a historical location, not a boundary. Prices routinely close outside the range that defined the prior 30 days; a new high or low simply resets the denominator.

Dispersion of 7.77 percentage points is a measure of how spread out the session returns were on this particular day. It does not indicate that dispersion will remain at this level, widen, or compress. The structural failure of any analysis built on a single session's regime label is that the label is retrospective by construction — it is assigned after the candle closes and says nothing about what the next candle will be classified as.

The 2026-08-10 session closed with its gains concentrated in a small number of pairs and its losses spread thinly across the other half of the field — a shape that the mixed label captures accurately but only in retrospect.
