Session Read 2026-10-08: 3 of 20 Pairs Higher
This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-10-08 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange candles. The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's close, its session change, its 7-day and 30-day changes, and where the close sat inside its own 30-day high-low range.
The session carried a broad-decline regime label. That label describes what the closed session did — it is not a characterisation of any session still in progress.

What the Session Did
Seventeen of the 20 pairs in the table closed lower on 2026-10-08. Breadth — the raw count of pairs that closed higher — came in at 3 of 20. The median session change was -3.51%, meaning half the field moved by more than that and half by less.
The strongest pair was IMX at +4.43%, closing 76% of the way up its 30-day range. The two other advancers, STX (+2.78%) and ATOM (+2.05%), closed at 82% and 51% of their respective 30-day ranges. Their positive sessions were isolated rather than part of a broad upward current.
On the declining side, losses clustered in a wide band. BTC fell -1.90% on the session, sitting 54% up its 30-day range. Losses deepened toward the bottom of the table: ADA dropped -9.06%, AVAX -9.49%, ICP -10.14%, and NEAR led all decliners at -16.32%. Notably, NEAR's session loss arrived despite its 30-day change standing at +92.12% — the highest in the table — and its close sitting 66% up its own 30-day range, illustrating that a high range position does not insulate a pair from a sharp single-session move.
Dispersion — the spread between the strongest and weakest session returns — measured 20.75 percentage points (IMX at +4.43% minus NEAR at -16.32%). That is a wide spread for a single session, and it means the field did not move as a uniform block even within a broadly negative day.

Regime and What Distinguishes It
The broad-decline label applies when a clear majority of the tracked pairs close lower in the same session. On 2026-10-08, 17 of 20 pairs closing lower satisfied that threshold comfortably. The label distinguishes this session from a mixed session — where advancing and declining pairs are more evenly split — and from a compressed session, where moves are small in magnitude regardless of direction.
This session was neither compressed nor mixed. The median move of -3.51% is large relative to typical round-trip transaction costs, and the 20.75-percentage-point dispersion between the top and bottom performers is wide. Both features are consistent with a session in which selling pressure was widespread but unevenly distributed across individual pairs. Pairs with high 30-day gains were not uniformly protected: AVAX, which carried a 30-day gain of +25.75%, fell -9.49% on the session; NEAR, with a 30-day gain of +92.12%, fell -16.32%. Conversely, STX, up +40.51% over 30 days, managed a +2.78% session gain.
Range positions across the table shifted toward the lower end of each pair's 30-day window. ETH closed at 26% of its range, DOGE at 21%, XLM at 30%, and HBAR at 31%. Those figures describe where prices sat relative to the prior 30 days at the close of this specific session.
What These Conditions Mean for Execution Cost
In a session where the median move is -3.51% and losses in the lower half of the table run from roughly -5% to -16%, the absolute size of moves is large relative to the round-trip cost of a standard spot trade. On most centralised spot venues, a retail taker round-trip (entry plus exit) runs in the range of 0.10% to 0.60% depending on fee tier and pair liquidity — figures published in exchange fee schedules. Against a median session move of -3.51%, that cost is a meaningful but not dominant fraction of the total move.
The more relevant cost consideration on a day like this is slippage rather than the headline fee. Wide dispersion and sharp single-pair moves — particularly NEAR's -16.32% — are typically accompanied by wider bid-ask spreads and thinner order books on the affected pairs. A position that needs to be closed into a fast-moving market absorbs slippage on top of the posted fee, and that combination can erode a larger share of any intended gain or add to a loss.
For strategies that rely on holding period rather than frequency or size to clear the round-trip cost floor, a broad-decline session compresses the available return on any long position opened before the session. The three pairs that closed higher — IMX, STX, and ATOM — produced session gains of +4.43%, +2.78%, and +2.05% respectively. Those figures are large enough to exceed a standard round-trip fee, but they represent 3 of 20 outcomes on this particular session.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-decline label describes what closed on 2026-10-08; it carries no predictive content about the session that follows. Regime classifications on this site are descriptive taxonomies applied after the fact, not signals about future direction.
The dispersion figure of 20.75 percentage points is striking, but high dispersion in one session does not indicate that dispersion will persist, narrow, or widen in subsequent sessions. Similarly, the pairs that closed at low range positions — ETH at 26%, DOGE at 21% — are described by those figures relative to the 30-day window that existed at the close of this session. That window shifts every day as new candles are added and old ones drop off.
NEAR's combination of a +92.12% 30-day gain and a -16.32% session loss is a factual description of what the candles showed on this date. It does not constitute evidence that large prior gains predict large subsequent losses, nor does it suggest the reverse. One data point is insufficient to support either inference.
The regime label, the breadth count, the median, and the dispersion figure together describe a texture of the session that closed. They do not describe the session that is open.
The 2026-10-08 session closed with 17 of 20 pairs lower, a median decline of -3.51%, and a 20.75-percentage-point spread between the day's single outlier to the upside and its sharpest decliner — a wide internal gap that the broad-decline label alone does not fully capture.
