Session Read 2026-08-13: 15 of 20 Pairs Higher
This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-08-13, drawn from Coinbase Exchange candles across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs. The session table — six columns: pair, close, session change, 7-day change, 30-day change, and 30-day range position — is rendered separately; the text below describes what the aggregate picture looked like.
The session carried a dispersed regime label. That label describes only what the closed session did; it carries no implication about the session that follows.

What the Session Did
Fifteen of the 20 pairs closed higher on 2026-08-13, giving a breadth reading of 75%. The median session change across the field was +0.79%, meaning half the pairs moved by less than that figure and half by more. That median sits close to flat in absolute terms, and the majority of pairs were clustered in a narrow band around it — BTC closed +0.02%, ETH +0.37%, XRP +0.40%, and several others within a percentage point of the median in either direction.
The outlier that pulled the distribution wide was ATOM, which closed +7.44% on the session and extended its 7-day gain to +10.94%. Its 30-day range position of 76% indicates the close sat well into the upper portion of its own prior 30-day range. On the other end, HBAR closed -0.77% and sat at just 2% of its 30-day range — meaning its close on this session was near the bottom of the range it has occupied over the past month. OP and LINK also stood out on the upside, closing +3.46% and +2.51% respectively, though both remain well below their 30-day highs on a percentage basis (OP at 30% of its range, LINK notably at 97%).
Several pairs with negative 30-day figures — FET at -16.50%, STX at -26.53%, NEAR at -18.50% — closed the session modestly higher but still sit in the lower reaches of their 30-day ranges, as reflected in range positions of 13%, 8%, and 18% respectively. The session advance, where it existed, did not uniformly lift pairs out of their recent troughs.

Regime: Dispersed
A dispersed session is one where the spread between the strongest and weakest pair is wide relative to a compressed or mixed session. On 2026-08-13 that spread was 8.22 percentage points — ATOM at +7.44% and HBAR at -0.77%. A broad-advance session would show most pairs moving together with a narrower spread and a higher median; a broad-decline would show the inverse. A compressed session would show both breadth and dispersion constrained. What distinguished this session was the combination of decent breadth (15 of 20 higher) with a wide spread driven by a single outlier, while the bulk of the field moved modestly.
Dispersion of this kind is typically a signature of idiosyncratic rather than macro-driven movement: one or two pairs doing something specific while the rest of the market drifts. Whether that idiosyncratic driver was news, a liquidity event, or rotation within the field is not determinable from price data alone. The label records the shape of the outcome, not its cause.
Cost of Involvement in This Kind of Session
Execution cost is a fixed drag regardless of regime, but its significance relative to the available move varies substantially across a dispersed field. On 2026-08-13, a round-trip on a maker-taker venue typically costs somewhere in the range of 0.10% to 0.50% depending on tier and whether limit or market orders are used — figures that are published in exchange fee schedules. Against ATOM's session move of +7.44%, that round-trip cost is a small fraction of the gross move. Against BTC's +0.02% or XLM's +0.14%, the same fixed cost exceeds or nearly equals the entire session range on a close-to-close basis.
Spread and slippage compound this. Pairs with lower liquidity tend to carry wider quoted spreads and more slippage on larger orders; the session close price in the table does not reflect what a market order would have received mid-session. In a dispersed session, the pairs where the move was large enough to absorb round-trip costs are few, and identifying them in advance is a separate problem entirely — one the session data, recorded after the close, cannot solve retroactively.
Holding period is the lever that most changes the cost picture: a position held across multiple sessions amortises the round-trip over a larger cumulative move. A single-session trade in a pair that moved less than 0.50% on 2026-08-13 would face a round-trip cost that is a very large fraction of the gross move, regardless of execution quality.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single daily session is a sample of one. The dispersed label describes the shape of 2026-08-13; it does not describe a persistent state. Dispersed sessions can be followed by compressed sessions, broad advances, or further dispersion — the label is a backward-looking classification, not a regime indicator with predictive content.
ATOM's +7.44% session gain and +10.94% 7-day gain are observations about a closed period. A 7-day figure that is positive while the 30-day figure is -4.03% illustrates how short windows can sit inside longer counter-trends without implying anything about continuation. The range position of 76% records where the close sat inside the prior 30-day range; it does not indicate where the next close will sit.
Breadth of 15 of 20 is above the midpoint of the field, but a majority of those 15 pairs moved by less than 1% on the session. That is a narrow advance in magnitude even if it is a majority advance in count. Neither the count nor the magnitude establishes a trend. The structural limitation of session-level data is that one day's outcome is dominated by noise, and no regime label, breadth figure, or dispersion measure changes that.
The 2026-08-13 session closed with a wide field, one clear outlier, and a majority of pairs that barely moved — a combination that the dispersed label captures accurately and that the single day's data cannot explain further.
