Session Read 2026-09-30: 12 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-09-30, drawn from Coinbase Exchange candles across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs. The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's close, session change, seven-day and thirty-day change, and where the close sat inside the pair's own thirty-day range.

The session carried a dispersed regime label — a descriptor for what the closed session did, not a characterisation of anything still open.

What the Session Did

Twelve of the twenty pairs closed higher on 2026-09-30, giving a breadth reading of 12/20. The median session change landed at +0.58%, a modest positive figure that sits well below the moves at the extremes. STX was the strongest, closing up +16.83% on the session and sitting 83% of the way up its own thirty-day range. AVAX was the weakest, closing down -4.37% and sitting at 78% of its thirty-day range despite the session loss — a reminder that a single negative session does not undo a pair's position within a longer window.

The spread between those two endpoints was 21.20 percentage points, which is the dispersion figure for this session. Most of the table sits in a much narrower band: the majority of pairs recorded session moves between roughly -1% and +3%, with STX and NEAR (+9.22%) pulling the top of the distribution sharply upward. NEAR's thirty-day change of +177.73% is also the most striking figure in the longer-horizon columns; that figure describes what happened over the prior thirty days and nothing beyond it.

Range positions across the table were broadly elevated. Many pairs closed in the upper half of their thirty-day ranges, with several above 70%. ATOM and HBAR were the exceptions, sitting at 50% and 55% respectively — meaning their closes on this date were near the midpoint of their recent ranges rather than toward either extreme.

Closes for the session dated 2026-09-30, from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. Sorted by the session's own change. Range position is where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day range, 0% at the low and 100% at the high.

Regime Description: Dispersed

A dispersed session is one where the gap between the strongest and weakest pair is wide enough that the median no longer summarises the field well. On 2026-09-30 the median of +0.58% describes only a narrow slice of what actually happened; the full distribution ran from -4.37% to +16.83%. That 21.20 percentage-point spread is what earns the dispersed label rather than mixed or compressed.

A mixed session would show similarly split breadth but with moves clustered closer together. A compressed session would show small moves throughout, with dispersion well below this figure. What distinguishes this session is not the breadth count alone — 12/20 is only slightly above even — but the width of the outcome spread, driven primarily by the outlier performance at the top of the table. The eight pairs that closed lower did so with relatively contained losses; the drag on the field came from concentration at the bottom, not from broad weakness.

Cost Context for This Kind of Session

On Coinbase Exchange, maker fees for standard accounts run at 0.40% per side (as of the current published schedule), implying a round-trip floor of roughly 0.80% before any spread or slippage is counted. Taker fees are higher. Against that floor, the session moves on 2026-09-30 present a wide range of outcomes: the top movers — STX at +16.83% and NEAR at +9.22% — produced session changes large enough that the round-trip cost is a small fraction of the gross move. For the cluster of pairs that moved between -1% and +1%, the round-trip fee represents a substantial portion of, or exceeds, the gross session change entirely.

Dispersion of this magnitude tends to concentrate execution cost concerns in the middle of the distribution. Pairs with single-digit basis-point moves on the session are the ones where fee drag is most acute relative to the price action observed. Spread and slippage are additional costs that vary by pair liquidity and are not captured in the candle data; they widen the effective round-trip cost beyond the published fee schedule alone.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The dispersed label describes the distribution of closes on 2026-09-30; it does not describe the sessions before it or after it, and it carries no predictive content about regime persistence. Dispersed sessions can be followed by compressed ones, by further dispersed ones, or by anything in between — the label is retrospective by construction.

The outlier figures — STX's +16.83% session gain and NEAR's +177.73% thirty-day change — are descriptions of what closed, not evidence that those magnitudes are repeatable or that they indicate a structural shift in those pairs. Large single-session moves in dispersed regimes frequently mean-revert, continue, or do neither in ways that one session of data cannot distinguish. The range-position column shows where a close sat inside a historical window; it does not indicate where the next close will sit. Nothing in this session read establishes a pattern, a trend, or an edge.

The 2026-09-30 session closed with most pairs in the upper half of their thirty-day ranges and a distribution wide enough that the median substantially understates the spread of outcomes — a geometry that the dispersed label was designed to capture.
