Session Read 2026-09-22: 14 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-09-22 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange candles. The table published alongside this piece shows each pair's close price, session change, 7-day and 30-day changes, and where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day high-low range.

The session carried a mixed regime label — the coarsest classification this desk applies. That label describes what the closed session did; it carries no information about what any subsequent session will do.

What the Session Did

Fourteen of the twenty pairs closed higher on 2026-09-22, with a median session change of +1.33%. The advance was uneven. HBAR led at +6.09%, followed closely by OP at +5.78% and APT at +4.22%. At the other end, STX closed -1.82% and LINK -0.99%, while BTC (-0.46%), ETH (-0.80%), and SOL (-0.29%) each shed a fraction of a percent — meaningful because those three are often treated as bellwethers for the broader set.

Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session return — came in at 7.91 percentage points. That is a moderately wide spread: wide enough that the experience of holding any single pair differed substantially from the median, but not so extreme as to suggest a dislocated or crisis-like tape.

Range position, which marks where each close sat inside the pair's own 30-day high-low band, was notably elevated across the board. Referring to the table, the majority of gainers closed in the 90th percentile or above of their 30-day ranges. APT closed at 96%, ADA at 95%, SOL at 95%, HBAR and OP both at 94%. Even several of the session's laggards — BTC at 90%, ETH at 88% — closed well into the upper portion of their monthly ranges. STX, the weakest pair, was the notable exception at 64%, consistent with a pair that has risen sharply over 30 days (+43.08%) but gave back ground on this particular session.

The 7-day figures in the table provide context for the session result. NEAR carried a 7-day change of +88.51% into this close; AVAX +55.67%; APT +51.11%. Those are large prior moves, and the session result for each of those pairs was positive but much smaller than the weekly run, which is a descriptive observation about pace rather than a signal of any kind.

Regime and What Distinguishes It

The mixed label is applied when breadth and dispersion together do not satisfy the threshold for any of the four more specific regimes this desk uses. A broad-advance session requires a larger share of pairs closing higher and tighter clustering around a positive median. A broad-decline session is the mirror. A compressed session shows low dispersion regardless of direction. A dispersed session shows high dispersion with no clear directional majority.

The 2026-09-22 session had a positive majority (14 of 20) and a positive median (+1.33%), which tilts toward advance territory, but the six declining pairs included the three largest by conventional prominence — BTC, ETH, and SOL — and the dispersion of 7.91 percentage points was wide enough to prevent the session from reading as a clean, broad-based move. That combination — most pairs up, the heavyweights mixed or down, gains concentrated in smaller-cap names — is the structural signature of a mixed classification rather than a broad-advance one.

What These Conditions Mean for Execution Cost

The moves on show on 2026-09-22 ranged from -1.82% (STX) to +6.09% (HBAR) at the session level. A standard maker fee on a major spot exchange runs roughly 0.40% to 0.60% per side for retail tiers, producing a round-trip floor of approximately 0.80% to 1.20% before spread and slippage are added. At the median session change of +1.33%, that round-trip floor consumes a substantial fraction of the gross move — somewhere between 60% and 90% of it, depending on the fee tier and the pair's typical spread.

For the session's larger movers — HBAR at +6.09%, OP at +5.78%, APT at +4.22% — the round-trip fee is a smaller proportion of the gross move, though slippage in less-liquid pairs can widen the effective cost meaningfully beyond the posted fee rate. The pairs sitting at or near the top of their 30-day ranges may also carry wider spreads if liquidity providers have adjusted their quotes to reflect recent volatility in the 7-day window.

The six declining pairs present a different arithmetic: a position that closes the session at -1.82% (STX) or -0.99% (LINK) absorbs both the directional loss and the round-trip fee, making the effective cost of being wrong on direction larger than the raw session figure suggests. This is a structural feature of short holding periods, not a property specific to this session.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The mixed classification describes the internal structure of the 2026-09-22 close; it does not characterise a trend, confirm a pattern, or indicate anything about the session that follows it. Regime labels are assigned after the fact from the data that produced them. They are not predictive categories.

The elevated range positions — with most pairs closing in the upper 85–96% of their 30-day bands — describe where prices closed relative to recent history. That observation is complete in itself. It does not imply mean reversion, continuation, or any other directional outcome. A pair closing at 96% of its 30-day range has done so; what it does next is not encoded in that figure.

Similarly, the large 7-day and 30-day changes visible in the table for names like NEAR (+88.51% over 7 days, +118.59% over 30 days) describe the magnitude of moves that have already occurred. Whether those moves persist, accelerate, or reverse is outside the scope of any classification this desk applies to a single closed session.

Breadth of 14 of 20 is a majority but not an overwhelming one. Six sessions out of twenty closing lower — including BTC, ETH, and SOL — means the positive median is partly a function of which pairs happened to gain, not a uniform market-wide move. Treating the session as representative of a single underlying condition would overstate what the data shows.

The 2026-09-22 session closed with most pairs in positive territory, gains concentrated in mid- and smaller-cap names, and the three most prominent pairs finishing in the red — a combination that the desk's classification machinery reads as mixed rather than anything more directional.
