Session Read 2026-08-26: 17 of 20 Pairs Higher
This piece covers the completed daily session of 2026-08-26 across the twenty USD-quoted crypto pairs tracked by Skia Paper using Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session has closed; the figures below are final for that date.
The session was classified as a broad advance. What that label describes — and what it does not — is the subject of the sections that follow.

What the Session Did
Seventeen of the twenty tracked pairs closed higher on 2026-08-26. The median session change landed at +1.69%, and the full table of closes, session changes, seven-day and thirty-day figures, and range positions is rendered separately. The notes here describe the shape of the session rather than restating every row.
SOL was the session's strongest mover at +5.68%, closing at 97% of its own 30-day range — meaning its close sat near the top of the price corridor it has traced over the past month. ETH added +2.64% and also sat high in its range at 94%. BTC, by contrast, contributed only +0.64% despite sitting at 88% of its 30-day range, indicating that its range itself has been compressing relative to peers. STX carried a notable 30-day figure of +100.52%, though its session contribution of +2.67% was in line with the mid-pack.
Three pairs declined. OP was the weakest at -2.30%, sitting at 43% of its 30-day range — the only declining pair that also sat in the lower half of its own range. ATOM fell -0.69% and XRP -0.80%, though XRP's 30-day figure of +33.55% and 7-day of +28.70% show the session dip arrived against a strong recent backdrop. Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session moves — was 7.98 percentage points, a moderately wide spread for a session where most pairs moved in the same direction.

The Regime This Session Describes
A broad-advance label is applied when the majority of tracked pairs close higher and breadth is sufficiently wide to distinguish the session from a mixed or compressed one. On 2026-08-26, 17-of-20 breadth clears that threshold clearly. A mixed session would typically show closer to an even split; a compressed session would show most pairs moving, but within a narrow band where dispersion stays low. Here, the 7.98-percentage-point spread between SOL and OP means the session was broad but not uniform.
The range-position column adds texture. Pairs sitting at high range positions — SOL at 97%, ETH at 94%, BTC at 88%, STX at 88% — closed near the upper end of their own recent corridors. Several mid-table pairs such as DOGE (60%), NEAR (60%), and AVAX (61%) closed roughly in the middle of their ranges, suggesting the session lifted the field without uniformly pushing everything to new 30-day highs. APT was a notable outlier, gaining +1.69% on the session yet sitting at only 29% of its 30-day range, which reflects a range that has been wide and whose prior lows were deep.
What These Conditions Mean for Execution Cost
On Coinbase Exchange, the standard taker fee schedule for spot trading runs from approximately 0.40% at low volume tiers down to lower rates at higher monthly volumes, as published in Coinbase's fee documentation. A round-trip taker trade — one buy and one sell at market — therefore costs roughly 0.80% at the base tier before spread and slippage are considered.
Against the session moves recorded on 2026-08-26, that cost profile looks different depending on where in the distribution a pair sat. The median move of +1.69% leaves a narrow margin over a round-trip taker fee at the base tier; a pair moving at that level would need to be held through the session rather than traded intraday for the gross move to exceed the fee floor. SOL's +5.68% session move represents a much larger gross, meaning the fee is a proportionally smaller fraction of the observed price change. OP's -2.30% move illustrates the other side: a pair that declined through a session offers no gross move to absorb cost on the long side, and any position entered and exited intraday would face the full round-trip fee regardless of direction.
Spread and slippage are not captured in daily candle data, but sessions with wide breadth and directional momentum tend historically to show tighter effective spreads in liquid pairs than sessions where price is directionless. That observation describes a pattern in market microstructure; it does not apply uniformly to every pair or every moment within the session.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-advance classification describes what happened on 2026-08-26; it is not a characterisation of a trend, and it carries no implication about the session that follows. Breadth of 17-of-20 on one day has appeared before sessions that continued higher, before sessions that reversed, and before sessions that went sideways — the label alone does not distinguish between those outcomes.
Range positions describe where a close sat inside a historical window, not where price is headed. A pair closing at 97% of its 30-day range has closed near the top of that range; whether the range expands, contracts, or shifts is not encoded in that figure. Similarly, the 7-day and 30-day percentage figures in the table describe what price did over those completed periods; they are not momentum signals with predictive content, and treating them as such is a structural misreading of what the data contains.
The regime label is applied after the session closes, using only data from that session. It is a description, not a forecast, and the mechanism that produces it has no forward-looking component. A broad advance followed by a broad decline is not a failure of the classification system; it is the system working as designed, labelling one closed session at a time.
The 2026-08-26 session closed with the field largely in agreement on direction, SOL leading at the top of its recent range, and OP the lone pair to decline meaningfully — a configuration the data records but does not explain.
