Session Read 2026-09-21: 19 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the Coinbase Exchange daily session that closed on 2026-09-21, drawn from 20 USD-quoted crypto spot pairs. A separate table renders the full per-pair figures; this text describes what the session did at the aggregate level.

The session carried a broad-advance regime label — the coarsest summary of what the closed candles showed. That label describes the session; it says nothing about any session that follows it.

What the Session Did

Nineteen of the twenty tracked pairs closed higher on 2026-09-21. The one exception was AVAX, which closed -0.74% on the session even as it sat 88% up its own 30-day range — meaning its prior run had already carried it well toward the top of its recent envelope before the session opened. The median session change across all twenty pairs was +6.97%.

FET led the field at +16.70%, closing 94% up its 30-day range, and carried a seven-day gain of +25.65% and a thirty-day gain of +26.89% into that close. DOGE was the second-strongest at +14.33%, sitting 90% up its 30-day range. The table shows the full distribution; the notable feature is how many pairs clustered in the mid-to-upper reaches of their own 30-day ranges — HBAR at 99%, APT at 95%, SOL at 96%, and several others above 90%.

Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session changes — was 17.44 percentage points (FET's +16.70% minus AVAX's -0.74%). That is a wide spread for a single session, meaning the field did not move as a uniform block even though breadth was near-total. A handful of pairs at the lower end of the session-change ranking, including STX at +1.43%, OP at +1.76%, and ATOM at +2.07%, advanced only modestly in percentage terms despite the broad participation.

Several pairs showed notable divergence between their session change and their longer lookbacks. NEAR, for instance, posted a session gain of +2.51% — below the median — while its 30-day figure stood at +127.52% and its 7-day figure at +73.03%, suggesting that most of its recent move predated this particular session. AVAX showed a similar pattern: -0.74% on the session against a 30-day gain of +49.89%.

Regime and Its Neighbours

A broad-advance label is assigned when the majority of pairs close higher and participation is wide enough that the result is not driven by one or two large-cap anchors. On 2026-09-21, 19 of 20 pairs advancing satisfies that threshold clearly; breadth was near-total rather than merely majority.

What distinguishes this from a compressed session is the size of the moves: a median of +6.97% is not a tight, low-volatility day. What distinguishes it from a dispersed session is that the advance was broad rather than split between large gainers and large losers. The 17.44-percentage-point dispersion figure is wide in absolute terms, but it is driven by one pair (FET) pulling away from a field that was otherwise advancing; the bottom of the field was not declining sharply, it was simply advancing less.

A mixed label would have applied if a meaningful number of pairs had closed lower. With only one decliner, and that decliner down less than one percent, the session did not meet that condition.

Execution Costs Against Session-Scale Moves

On a session where the median move was +6.97% and even the weakest gainer (STX) advanced +1.43%, standard spot trading fees — typically in the range of 0.05% to 0.60% per side on major centralised venues, depending on tier and maker/taker status — represented a small fraction of the session-scale moves on show. A round trip at 0.20% per side costs 0.40% in fees alone; against a +6.97% median, that fee is roughly 6 basis points on every 100 basis points of move.

The more material cost consideration on a day with this much directional movement is slippage rather than headline fee rate. Wide, fast-moving sessions tend to widen bid-ask spreads on thinner pairs, meaning the effective round-trip cost can exceed the posted fee schedule by a margin that depends on order size and the liquidity depth of the specific pair. Pairs that moved the most — FET at +16.70%, DOGE at +14.33% — are also pairs where intraday volatility would have been elevated, and where a market order executed at an unfavourable moment in the session could have experienced meaningful slippage relative to the closing price shown in the table.

The table shows closing prices only. It does not show intraday highs, lows, or the path the price took to reach the close. The range-position figure (where the close sat inside the 30-day range) is a 30-day measure, not an intraday one, and carries no information about where within the session's own candle the close fell.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label describes what the twenty candles that closed on 2026-09-21 showed; it is not a characterisation of the market regime, a confirmation of a trend, or a signal of any kind about subsequent sessions. Regime labels on this site are taxonomic — they sort closed sessions into categories — and the category a session falls into has no demonstrated predictive relationship with the category of the session that follows it.

The high range-position readings across many pairs — HBAR at 99%, APT at 95%, SOL at 96% — describe where closes sat relative to the prior 30 days of price history. They do not describe where closes will sit relative to the next 30 days. A pair closing near the top of its 30-day range has, by definition, been near recent highs; that fact is consistent with both continuation and reversal, and the data here cannot distinguish between the two.

The structural failure of reading too much into a broad-advance session is the assumption that breadth is durable. Near-total breadth on a single day is consistent with a genuine shift in market-wide conditions and equally consistent with a one-day flush of short covering or a liquidity-driven spike that partially retraces. The data on this page does not contain the information needed to separate those cases.

The 2026-09-21 session closed with 19 of 20 pairs higher, a median gain of +6.97%, and a field that was broadly elevated within its own recent price history — a combination that made for an unambiguous broad-advance classification and little else that a single day's candles can reliably establish.
