Session Read 2026-09-13: 2 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-09-13 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange candles. The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's close price, its open-to-close session change, its 7-day and 30-day percentage changes, and where its close sat inside its own 30-day high-low range.

The session carried a broad-decline regime label — the coarsest description of what the day's breadth and direction collectively produced. That label describes the session that has already closed; it says nothing about the one that follows.

What the Session Did

On 2026-09-13, only 2 of the 20 tracked pairs closed higher. ICP led at +1.21% and HBAR was the other advancer at +0.58%. Every remaining pair declined, with NEAR the weakest at -2.97%. The median session change across all 20 pairs was -1.55%, meaning the typical pair lost roughly that much between its open and its close.

Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session return — measured 4.18 percentage points (ICP's +1.21% minus NEAR's -2.97%). That figure is moderate: wide enough that outcomes were not uniform, but not so extreme as to suggest a small cluster of pairs diverged sharply from the rest. The full table shows the distribution; the declines were fairly continuous from IMX at -0.13% down to NEAR at -2.97%, with no obvious break in the sequence.

Range positions — where each pair's close sat relative to its own 30-day high and low — were mixed despite the session's negative tilt. BTC closed at 72% of its 30-day range, ETH at 76%, and STX at 79%, meaning those pairs gave back ground on the day while still sitting in the upper portion of their recent ranges. At the other end, OP sat at 33% and ATOM at 30%, near the lower portion of their respective 30-day ranges. The two advancers, ICP and HBAR, sat at 63% and 48% respectively — neither at an extreme.

On the 30-day horizon, several pairs carried large positive figures into this session: STX at +116.65%, NEAR at +40.31%, XRP at +34.27%, ETH at +31.67%, and SOL at +31.77%. A single session's decline does not reverse those accumulated moves, but it does illustrate that a broad-decline session can occur against a backdrop of strong medium-term performance.

The Regime This Describes

A broad-decline label is applied when the majority of pairs close lower and breadth is heavily skewed — here, 18 of 20 pairs declined, which is a high degree of uniformity. The neighbouring regime labels help clarify what this is and is not. A mixed session would show more balance between advancers and decliners. A compressed session would show very narrow dispersion regardless of direction. A dispersed session would show a wide spread of outcomes without a clear directional lean.

What distinguished 2026-09-13 was the combination of lopsided breadth and moderate — not extreme — dispersion. The 4.18 pp spread is consistent with a session where most pairs moved in the same direction but at different speeds, rather than one where a handful of outliers drove the headline. The median of -1.55% sat close to the middle of the distribution, suggesting the losses were broadly shared rather than concentrated.

What These Conditions Mean for Execution Cost

Coinbase's standard taker fee schedule for spot trading runs from approximately 0.05% to 0.60% per side depending on 30-day volume tier, implying a round-trip taker cost of roughly 0.10% to 1.20% at posted rates. Against a median session move of -1.55% on 2026-09-13, a round-trip taker cost at the lower end of that range would represent a meaningful fraction of the day's typical move — and at the higher end, it would consume the majority of it.

For pairs near the weakest end of the session — NEAR at -2.97%, SHIB at -2.84%, DOGE at -2.76% — the gross session move was large enough that round-trip taker fees at standard rates would still leave a substantial remainder. For pairs near the compressed middle of the distribution — IMX at -0.13%, BTC at -0.60% — the session move was small relative to even a modest round-trip cost, meaning execution friction was a proportionally larger drag for any strategy that turned over within the session.

Spread and slippage add to stated fees. In a broad-decline session, liquidity conditions can shift intraday, and the effective spread at the moment of execution may differ from the resting spread. Nothing in the end-of-day candle data captures that intraday variation; the close price reflects where the pair settled, not the cost of getting there.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single session is a sample of one. The broad-decline label describes what happened on 2026-09-13; it does not characterise the asset class, the venue, or any strategy's typical outcome. A session in which 18 of 20 pairs declined is consistent with many different underlying conditions, and the same breadth figure has appeared in sessions that were followed by advances, further declines, and flat periods in roughly equal historical proportions — no classification of a closed session carries directional information about the next one.

The regime label is a post-hoc description. It is assigned after the candles close, using the data the session produced. It cannot be assigned in advance, and it does not predict its own successor. A strategy that is calibrated to perform well in broad-decline sessions will encounter the structural problem that the label is only available after the session ends.

The 30-day figures in the table are also descriptive of a completed window. STX's +116.65% over 30 days ending on this date, or NEAR's +40.31%, are records of price history. They do not indicate the rate at which those moves will continue, reverse, or stall. The range position figures — where pairs closed inside their 30-day ranges — describe the geometry of recent price action, not its future trajectory. Any use of these figures beyond description involves assumptions this data cannot support.

The 2026-09-13 session closed with the broadest possible skew toward declines — 18 of 20 pairs lower — while dispersion remained moderate and several pairs held elevated positions within their 30-day ranges, a combination that the broad-decline label captures in outline but not in full texture.
