Session Read 2026-08-30: 0 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-08-30 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session has closed; the figures below are final for that date.

The session is classified broad-decline: zero of the 20 pairs closed higher, the median move was -2.91%, and the spread between the strongest and weakest pair was 4.67 percentage points. The table published alongside this post lists each pair's close, session change, 7-day and 30-day change, and where the close sat inside its own 30-day range.

What the Session Did

Breadth on 2026-08-30 was absolute: all 20 pairs declined. The median session change of -2.91% places the typical move well inside the range that routine maker-taker fees can absorb, but the distribution was not uniform. BTC led the field at -0.73% while ICP closed at -5.40%, a gap of 4.67 percentage points that signals meaningful within-session divergence even inside a uniform directional outcome.

Range-position readings in the table show where each pair's close fell relative to its own 30-day high and low. BTC and ETH both closed near the upper end of their 30-day ranges — at 80% each — despite their session losses, reflecting strong prior-month runs of +23.62% and +29.89% respectively over 30 days. At the other end, APT closed at just 5% of its 30-day range and carried a 30-day figure of -6.85%, the only pair in the set showing a negative 30-day reading. OP sat at 14% of its range alongside a 7-day reading of -22.97%, the sharpest 7-day decline in the set. STX, despite a session loss of -4.18%, retained a 30-day gain of +69.77% and a range position of 67%, illustrating how a single session's direction can sit at odds with a longer trailing window.

The softer end of the decline — FET at -0.89%, ETH at -1.66% — contrasts with a cluster of pairs between -2.70% and -3.07% that account for roughly half the set. The heavier losses of -4.18% to -5.40% were concentrated in a smaller group: STX, APT, ADA, IMX, and ICP.

Regime Description: Broad-Decline

A broad-decline label is assigned when virtually all pairs in the set close lower in the same session. It sits at one end of a five-label spectrum. A mixed session sees roughly half the pairs advance and half decline. A compressed session has low dispersion regardless of direction. A dispersed session has high dispersion. A broad-advance session is the directional mirror of this one.

What distinguishes 2026-08-30 from a compressed session is that dispersion — at 4.67 percentage points — is not trivially small, even though direction was uniform. A session can be broad without being tight: the weakest pair fell more than seven times as far as the strongest. What distinguishes it from a merely mixed or dispersed session is that the directional unanimity was complete; not a single pair in the 20 closed positive.

The regime label describes what happened on that date. It is a classification of a closed session, not a characterisation of an ongoing state and not a statement about adjacent sessions.

Cost of Involvement on a Session Like This

Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule. At the lowest volume tier, taker fees run to 0.60% per side, producing a round-trip cost of approximately 1.20% before spread and slippage. Maker rebates reduce that figure but do not eliminate it; a resting limit order that fills still incurs the spread as an implicit cost.

Against the session's median move of -2.91%, a 1.20% round-trip fee represents roughly 41 basis points of every percentage point moved — a meaningful fraction, though not the majority. For pairs near the top of the session's distribution, the arithmetic is less comfortable: BTC's -0.73% session change is smaller than the round-trip fee at the standard taker rate, meaning a taker entering and exiting BTC within this single session would have paid more in fees than the pair moved in absolute terms. FET at -0.89% sits in a similar position.

Pairs at the weaker end — ICP at -5.40%, IMX at -4.68%, ADA at -4.46% — offered session moves that clear the round-trip fee by a wider margin in absolute terms, but that observation describes the arithmetic of the closed session only. Slippage in thinner books can widen the effective round-trip further, and a broad-decline session with zero advancing pairs is a condition under which bid-ask spreads on the weaker names may have widened relative to calmer sessions.

Strategies that clear the round-trip cost on sessions like this typically do so through one of three routes: holding period longer than a single session (so the fee is a smaller fraction of the cumulative move), size large enough to qualify for lower fee tiers, or frequency high enough that the per-trade fee is offset by a statistical edge across many trades. A single session's data does not distinguish which route applies.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-decline classification on 2026-08-30 describes that date's outcome; it does not establish a trend, confirm a pattern, or indicate the probability of any subsequent session's direction. The label is applied after the close, using only that session's data.

The range-position column shows where pairs closed inside their 30-day windows, but a pair sitting at 5% of its range — as APT did — is not thereby indicated to be near a floor; the 30-day range is itself a moving window that will shift as new sessions close. Equally, a pair at 80% of its range is not thereby indicated to be near a ceiling.

The 7-day figures in the table span multiple sessions and regimes; they cannot be attributed to the character of this single session. OP's 7-day reading of -22.97% and SOL's 7-day reading of +6.62% coexisted inside the same broad-decline session, illustrating that a uniform single-session direction carries no implication about the path that preceded it.

Dispersion of 4.67 percentage points is a factual description of the gap between BTC and ICP on this date. It does not indicate which pairs in a future session will lead or lag, nor does it indicate whether dispersion will widen or compress. The structural failure of any inference drawn from one session's regime label is that one session is simply too small a sample to support it.

The 2026-08-30 session closed with complete directional unanimity across all 20 pairs, a median decline of -2.91%, and enough internal spread — 4.67 percentage points from BTC to ICP — to show that uniform direction and uniform magnitude are different things.
