Session Read 2026-08-20: 20 of 20 Pairs Higher

The daily session ending 2026-08-20 covered 20 crypto pairs quoted in USD, sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The table published alongside this piece shows each pair's close, its session change from open to close, its 7-day and 30-day percentage changes, and where the close sat inside each pair's own 30-day high-low range — a figure called range position, where 0% marks the 30-day low and 100% marks the 30-day high.

This read describes what that closed session did. It does not describe anything that is still open, and none of the figures here are current prices.

What the Session Did

Every one of the 20 pairs closed higher on 2026-08-20, producing a breadth reading of 20 out of 20. The median session change landed at +5.81%, with the full table showing a wide spread of individual outcomes. XRP led at +14.68% and ATOM trailed at +1.37%, placing dispersion — the gap between strongest and weakest — at 13.31 percentage points.

Range positions tell a complementary story. Several pairs closed deep into the upper portion of their own 30-day ranges: AVAX and SOL each sat at 98% of their ranges, BTC at 97%, and OP, HBAR, ICP, ETH, and LINK all registered range positions of 90% or above. That clustering near 30-day highs was broad rather than concentrated in one corner of the market. At the other end, IMX closed at 41% of its range and APT at 50%, meaning those two pairs advanced on the session while remaining in the middle or lower half of where they have traded over the past month.

The 7-day and 30-day columns in the table show that the session's gains arrived against varying backdrops. STX, for instance, posted a session gain of +13.85% while sitting at a 30-day change of -12.45%, placing it at only 54% of its 30-day range despite a strong single-day move. XRP's +14.68% session gain came alongside a 7-day change of +25.70% and a 30-day change of +10.89%, with a range position of 79%. The table is the appropriate place to examine individual pair detail; this read focuses on the session-level pattern.

Regime: Broad Advance

The session has been labelled a broad advance. That label applies when a large share of tracked pairs close higher in the same session — here, the share was complete at 20 of 20. The label is a description of what the closed session produced, not a characterisation of the market at large or a forward-looking classification.

A broad advance is distinguished from a dispersed session, where gains and losses are spread across the board with no directional consensus. It is also distinct from a compressed session, where the majority moves in one direction but the magnitude of individual moves is small. On 2026-08-20, both conditions for a broad advance were present: the direction was uniform and the magnitude was substantial, with the median at +5.81% and several pairs recording gains well above that figure. A mixed session, by contrast, would show a majority advancing but with meaningful pockets of decline; none were present here.

The dispersion figure of 13.31 percentage points is worth noting alongside the breadth figure. Perfect breadth does not imply uniform movement — the distance from ATOM's +1.37% to XRP's +14.68% was considerable, meaning the session was simultaneously unanimous in direction and wide in magnitude across the group.

Cost Context for Sessions Like This

Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule; at the lowest volume tier, taker fees run to 0.60% per side, producing a round-trip cost floor of approximately 1.20% before spread and slippage are added. Maker fees at the same tier are 0.40% per side. Those figures are the published schedule as of the time of writing and are subject to change; the exchange's fee page is the authoritative source.

Against the session figures recorded on 2026-08-20, a round-trip taker cost of roughly 1.20% represents a small fraction of the median session move of +5.81%, and a still smaller fraction of the leading moves such as XRP's +14.68% or STX's +13.85%. In sessions where the median move is measured in single-digit percentages, per-trade costs are not trivial but they are not the dominant variable. The picture differs for the session's laggards: ATOM's +1.37% and LINK's +1.37% session gains are close to or below the round-trip taker cost floor, meaning a position entered and exited within the session on those pairs would have faced execution costs that consumed a large share of the gross move.

Slippage is a separate consideration. In a session where the majority of pairs are advancing simultaneously and range positions are clustering near 30-day highs, the conditions that tend to widen spreads and increase slippage — thin order books, low participation — are less likely to be present than in a session characterised by sharp one-sided moves in a single asset. That observation describes the general character of such sessions; it does not guarantee any particular execution outcome.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label accurately describes what the 2026-08-20 close produced; it does not describe what the market is, what it is becoming, or what any subsequent session will look like. Regime labels are assigned after the fact from completed data and carry no predictive content.

Perfect breadth — 20 of 20 — is a striking figure, but it is also the terminal reading on a binary scale. It cannot be exceeded, which means the only direction breadth can move in subsequent sessions is flat or lower. That arithmetic fact says nothing about the direction or magnitude of future price moves; it simply describes a ceiling on the breadth measure itself.

Range positions near 30-day highs for many pairs indicate where prices closed relative to recent history. They do not indicate whether that history will be revised upward, whether the range will expand, or whether the pairs will remain near those levels. A pair at 98% of its 30-day range has closed near its recent high; that is a description of the past 30 days, not a statement about the next period.

The dispersion figure of 13.31 percentage points describes the spread of outcomes within this one session. It does not indicate that future sessions will show similar or different dispersion, nor does it identify which pairs will lead or lag in any subsequent session. The structural limitation here is simply the size of the sample: one daily candle per pair is not sufficient to distinguish a persistent pattern from a single-session event.

The 2026-08-20 session closed with unanimous advances across all 20 tracked pairs, a median gain of +5.81%, and a dispersion of 13.31 percentage points — a combination that makes it one of the more uniform and energetic single sessions in the observable record for this desk.
