Session Read 2026-10-12: 1 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-10-12 across the 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs tracked by Skia Paper from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session closed before this piece was written; no prices here are live.

The session carried a broad-decline regime label. That label describes what the data showed after the close — it is not a characterisation of any ongoing condition.

What the Session Did

Nineteen of the 20 tracked pairs closed lower on 2026-10-12. The single exception was STX, which posted a session gain of +3.06%. The median session change across all 20 pairs was -6.18%, and the spread between the strongest and weakest — STX at +3.06% and NEAR at -13.68% — came to 16.74 percentage points of dispersion.

The losses were broadly distributed in magnitude. BTC, the largest pair by convention, closed -2.31% on the session, sitting at 55% of its own 30-day range. ETH closed -3.56%, sitting near the lower quarter of its 30-day range at 19%. Further down the table, pairs like APT (-11.72%), FET (-10.61%), and ICP (-10.22%) recorded double-digit session declines. The full table shows the distribution; what stands out in aggregate is how few pairs found support near the top of their 30-day ranges — most of the steepest losers closed in the lower half.

NEAR deserves a specific note: despite being the session's weakest pair at -13.68%, it carried a 30-day change of +114.72% and sat at 76% of its 30-day range, meaning the session's loss arrived from a position of considerable recent strength rather than from a depressed base. STX similarly showed 30-day momentum of +53.21% and sat at 79% of its range even after closing as the sole gainer.

What Broad Decline Means and Does Not Mean

The broad-decline label is applied when the overwhelming majority of pairs in the tracked universe close lower in the same session. Here, 19 of 20 pairs declined — a breadth reading of 1 out of 20 — which places this session firmly at the severe end of that classification. A mixed session might show 8–12 pairs higher; a compressed session would show narrow moves across the board regardless of direction. This session was neither: the moves were large and the direction was almost unanimous.

What distinguishes this session from a merely dispersed one is that dispersion was present — 16.74 percentage points between top and bottom — but it ran almost entirely within the negative column. Dispersion without a directional skew would produce roughly equal numbers of large winners and large losers. Here the distribution was skewed hard to the downside, with the sole positive outlier (STX at +3.06%) sitting well below the magnitude of the largest losses.

The range-position column adds texture: several of the hardest-hit pairs — NEAR at 76%, ICP at 57%, APT at 61% — were still sitting in the upper half of their 30-day ranges after the session closed, which reflects the scale of gains accumulated in the prior month rather than any signal about subsequent sessions.

Execution Cost in a Session Like This

On Coinbase Exchange, maker fees for most retail tiers run at 0.40% per side (as of the current published schedule), producing a round-trip floor of approximately 0.80% before spread and slippage. Taker fees are higher. For context against this session: the median move of -6.18% is roughly 7–8× a basic round-trip maker cost, which means the session's typical move was large relative to that floor. However, that observation cuts both ways — large moves in a single direction also mean that any position entered near the open and held through the close absorbed the full session loss before any exit cost was added.

Slippage risk rises when prices are moving quickly and in one direction. In a broad-decline session, bid-ask spreads on thinner pairs tend to widen as liquidity providers reprice. The pairs that closed down 10% or more — NEAR, APT, FET, ICP — are not the deepest markets in the tracked universe, and execution at the mid during rapid moves is generally not achievable. The round-trip cost is therefore better understood as a floor, not a ceiling, in sessions of this character.

Strategies that clear their round-trip costs through holding period — rather than frequency or size — face a different calculation here: a position held across this session absorbed a session change that, for most pairs, was a multiple of the fee floor. Whether that holding period is short or long determines how large a fraction the fee represents of the total move experienced.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-decline classification describes what happened on 2026-10-12; it does not describe a trend, a regime shift, or a condition that persists into subsequent sessions. Regime labels on this site are retrospective by construction — they are assigned after the close and describe only the session that produced them.

The 30-day figures in the table illustrate why single-session readings are weak evidence: NEAR's 30-day change of +114.72% and AVAX's +36.96% show that the same pairs experiencing steep session losses had been among the stronger performers over the prior month. A broad-decline session arriving after a period of 30-day strength is not the same structural event as one arriving after 30 days of weakness, but this data alone does not resolve what that difference implies going forward.

Breadth of 1 out of 20 is unusual, but unusual does not mean predictive. The distribution of sessions following a near-unanimous decline is not knowable from the session itself. The dispersion figure of 16.74 percentage points describes the range of outcomes within this session only. Nothing in this post establishes what the next session's breadth, median, or dispersion will be.

The 2026-10-12 session closed with the tracked universe in near-unanimous retreat, a median loss of -6.18%, and a single pair — STX — finishing higher against a backdrop of substantial 30-day gains across much of the table.
