Session Read 2026-10-11: 16 of 20 Pairs Higher
This post covers the Coinbase Exchange daily session that closed on 2026-10-11, drawing on candle data for 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs. The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's close, session change, seven-day and thirty-day change, and where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day range.
The session carried a broad-advance label, meaning most of the 20 pairs moved together to the upside on that day. What that label does and does not imply is described in the sections below.

What the Session Did
On 2026-10-11, 16 of the 20 tracked pairs closed higher. The median session change was +1.21%, meaning roughly half the field moved by more than that figure and half by less. The full table shows the distribution; the narrative here covers the shape of it.
NEAR led the field at +11.34% on the session, closing at a range position of 99% — meaning its close sat within 1% of the top of its own 30-day range. That 30-day figure stands at +149.38%, a substantially larger move than anything else in the set. ICP was the second-strongest at +10.91% on the session, with a 30-day change of +27.34% and a range position of 88%. Both figures were well above the median, and both pairs had already been accumulating distance from their 30-day lows before this session closed.
The middle of the field — ETH at +1.21%, ADA at +1.20%, DOGE at +1.12%, SOL at +1.11%, SHIB at +1.10% — clustered tightly near the median, each gaining roughly one percentage point on the session. Their range positions were more varied: SOL and LINK each sat at 53%, while DOGE sat at 31% and HBAR at 37%, indicating those pairs closed nearer the lower half of their 30-day ranges despite posting session gains.
Four pairs closed lower: DOT at -0.28%, STX at -0.70%, ATOM at -1.62%, and IMX at -3.25%. Notably, three of those four — STX, ATOM, and IMX — carried positive 7-day figures (+2.34%, +9.57%, and +4.26% respectively), and all four sat at high range positions (86%, 92%, 73%, and 83%). The weakest pair, IMX at -3.25%, held a 30-day gain of +59.37% and a range position of 83%, placing its close well inside the upper portion of its recent range despite the session decline.
Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session moves — was 14.59 percentage points (NEAR at +11.34% minus IMX at -3.25%). That is a wide spread for a single session across 20 pairs.

Regime Description: Broad Advance
A broad-advance label is applied when the majority of the tracked field closes higher in a single session and the median session change is positive. On 2026-10-11, both conditions were met: 16 of 20 pairs gained, and the median was +1.21% on the session. The label is descriptive of the session that closed; it says nothing about the session that follows.
A broad advance is distinguished from a dispersed session by the direction of the breadth: in a dispersed session, large moves occur but they are not concentrated on one side. Here, the gains were widespread, but the 14.59-percentage-point dispersion figure also indicates the field did not move uniformly — NEAR and ICP moved at multiples of the median, while the bottom half of the gainers barely cleared 1%. A compressed session, by contrast, would show a narrow dispersion with most pairs near the median. This session was neither compressed nor uniform; it was broad but uneven.
Several pairs that gained on the session carried negative 7-day figures — FET at -5.67% over 7 days despite a +6.03% session, HBAR at -9.57% over 7 days despite a +1.84% session, SOL at -8.52% over 7 days despite a +1.11% session. A single-session advance within a negative 7-day context is a description of those two windows, not a reconciliation of them.
Execution Cost in This Context
On a session where the median move was +1.21% and the majority of the field moved by roughly that amount or less, the round-trip cost of participation is a meaningful fraction of the available move. A standard taker fee on a major spot exchange runs in the range of 0.05% to 0.60% per side depending on tier and venue, implying a round-trip cost of 0.10% to 1.20%. Against a median session move of +1.21%, a round-trip at the higher end of that range consumes nearly the entire median gain before spread or slippage is considered.
Spread and slippage vary by pair and by order size. Pairs near the top of their 30-day ranges and with large session moves — NEAR at +11.34% and ICP at +10.91% — offered moves large enough that even a full round-trip fee was a small fraction of the session change. For pairs near the median, the fee-to-move ratio was much less forgiving. The three strategies that can clear round-trip cost are frequency, size, and holding period; a single-session move of roughly 1% is not large enough to absorb a taker fee on a short holding period without size or a fee tier that brings the round-trip well below 0.50%.
Pairs with low range positions — DOGE at 31%, HBAR at 37%, ETH at 39% — closed in the lower half of their 30-day ranges despite session gains, which is a description of where liquidity was priced relative to recent history, not a signal about future direction.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label describes what happened on 2026-10-11 and nothing else. It does not establish that the conditions producing it were stable, repeatable, or meaningful beyond that date. A run of broad-advance sessions would be a larger sample, but this post covers only the one that closed.
The structural failure of reading a regime label as forward guidance is that the label is assigned after the session closes, using only the data from that session. It has no predictive content by construction. The same breadth figure — 16 of 20 pairs higher — has appeared at the start of extended advances and immediately before sharp reversals in historical data. The label does not distinguish between those cases.
High range positions for the four declining pairs — STX at 92%, IMX at 83%, DOT at 86%, ATOM at 73% — describe where those pairs closed relative to their own recent history. That description does not imply mean reversion, continuation, or any other directional outcome. Range position is a location measure, not a momentum or reversal indicator.
The 30-day figures for NEAR (+149.38%), IMX (+59.37%), and STX (+57.51%) are large, but a large 30-day change is a description of what that window contained, not evidence that the move will extend or correct. Single-session data cannot resolve questions about multi-week structure.
The 2026-10-11 session closed with 16 of 20 pairs higher, a median gain of +1.21% on the session, and a dispersion of 14.59 percentage points between the strongest and weakest pair — a wide spread inside a broadly positive day.
