Session Read 2026-10-17: 1 of 20 Pairs Higher
This post covers the completed daily session of 2026-10-17 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session has closed; the figures below are final for that date.
The table rendered alongside this piece shows each pair's closing price, its session change (open-to-close), its 7-day and 30-day percentage changes, and where the close sat inside its own 30-day high-low range — a figure called range position, where 0% marks the 30-day low and 100% marks the 30-day high.

What the Session Did
On 2026-10-17, 19 of the 20 tracked pairs closed lower, producing a regime classification of broad-decline. The one exception was HBAR, which gained +2.12% on the session. The median session change across all 20 pairs was -2.70%, indicating the typical move was not a marginal dip but a meaningful intraday retreat.
Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session performer — came in at 8.56 percentage points, stretching from HBAR's +2.12% to OP's -6.44%. That spread is wide enough to mean the session was not a uniform compression; losses varied substantially from pair to pair. The table shows the full distribution.
Range positions tell a complementary story. Most pairs closed in the lower half of their own 30-day ranges: XRP sat at 6%, DOGE at 8%, SHIB at 10%, SOL at 12%, and ETH at 18%. Even HBAR, the session's sole gainer, closed only 19% up its 30-day range, reflecting that its 30-day picture (7d: -7.71%) has been broadly weak. Several pairs that carried strong 30-day gains into the session — NEAR at +54.37% over 30 days, STX at +46.50%, APT at +33.11% — still closed well below their 30-day highs after session losses of -4.12%, -6.24%, and -6.15% respectively. BTC was the relative anchor of the decline, shedding only -0.15% on the session and sitting at 46% of its 30-day range.

Regime Description: Broad-Decline
A broad-decline label is applied when the great majority of pairs in the tracked universe close lower in the same session. On 2026-10-17, breadth of 1 out of 20 satisfies that criterion unambiguously. This distinguishes the session from a mixed regime — where advances and declines are roughly balanced — and from a compressed regime, where most pairs move in the same direction but within a narrow band. Here the moves were neither balanced nor narrow.
A broad-decline is also distinct from a dispersed session. Dispersion of 8.56 percentage points is notable, but the direction was almost entirely one-sided; dispersion in this session came largely from the magnitude of losses varying, not from a split between gainers and losers. The single gainer, HBAR, was itself sitting only 19% up its 30-day range, so the advance did not represent a pair pressing into new territory.
The 7-day column in the table shows that the weakness on 2026-10-17 did not arrive in isolation for most pairs: ADA carried a 7-day change of -11.94% into the session close, FET -15.07%, IMX -21.19%, and ATOM -12.76%. Whether those 7-day figures represent accumulating pressure or coincidental timing is not something a single session's data can resolve.
Cost Context for a Session Like This
Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule; at standard retail taker rates the round-trip cost on a spot trade sits in the range of roughly 0.40% to 0.60% of notional (two legs at the applicable taker rate). On a session where the median move was -2.70% and the weakest pair moved -6.44%, those fee levels represent a meaningful but not dominant fraction of the gross move — for the median pair, a round-trip fee near 0.50% amounts to roughly one-fifth of the session's median move.
Slippage is a separate consideration. In a broad-decline session, sell-side pressure is distributed across most of the universe simultaneously. When many participants are on the same side of the market at once, bid-ask spreads on thinner pairs tend to widen and the effective fill price on a market order can diverge from the last-traded price. The range-position data — with XLM at 4%, XRP at 6%, DOGE at 8% — suggests several pairs closed near multi-week lows, which is often where liquidity is thinner on the bid side.
For strategies that clear their costs through holding period rather than frequency or size, a session like this is one data point among many. For strategies that depend on capturing intraday moves smaller than the median -2.70%, the fee floor on 2026-10-17 would have consumed a proportionally larger share of any gross edge.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-decline label describes what happened on 2026-10-17; it is a classification of a closed session, not a characterisation of a trend, and it carries no predictive content about the session that follows.
The regime label is also coarse by design. It captures direction and breadth but collapses the internal structure of the session — the sequence of intraday moves, the order in which pairs turned, the relationship between volume and price — into a single word. Two sessions can share the label broad-decline and look very different in their microstructure.
The 30-day figures in the table are a reminder of how quickly a single session's framing can mislead. NEAR closed the session at -4.12% yet still carries a 30-day change of +54.37%. STX fell -6.24% on the session against a 30-day backdrop of +46.50%. One session's loss does not erase a 30-day gain, and one 30-day gain does not soften a session's loss. The two figures measure different windows and neither explains the other.
Finally, dispersion of 8.56 percentage points on a day when only one pair gained means the spread came almost entirely from variation in how much pairs lost, not from a genuine contest between advancing and declining groups. That structural detail matters for interpreting the figure: wide dispersion in a broad-decline is not the same as wide dispersion in a mixed session.
The 2026-10-17 session closed with 19 of 20 pairs lower, a median move of -2.70%, and most range positions in the bottom fifth of their respective 30-day windows — a configuration the desk labels broad-decline and leaves, as always, without extension into the session that follows.
