Session Read 2026-10-07: 1 of 20 Pairs Higher

This piece covers the completed daily session of 2026-10-07 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session closed and is no longer active; every figure here is a historical record of that single day.

The session carried a broad-decline regime label — the coarsest description of what the day's tape produced. The sections below work through the internal structure of that decline: how wide the moves were, where pairs sat inside their own 30-day ranges when the session ended, what execution conditions look like in a tape like this, and what a single day's data cannot establish.

What the Session Did

On 2026-10-07, only 1 of 20 tracked pairs closed higher. The sole gainer was NEAR, which posted a session change of +5.21% and closed at 93% of its own 30-day range — near the top of the range it has occupied over the past month. Every other pair in the set closed in the red. The median session change across all 20 pairs was -4.59%, a figure that sits near the heavier end of the loss distribution rather than being pulled there by a handful of extreme outliers.

The full table shows the detail, but a few structural features are worth noting in text. The weakest pair, IMX, fell -8.05% on the session — yet it closed at 68% of its 30-day range, meaning the drop still left it in the upper portion of where it has traded over the past month. That same pattern appears elsewhere: APT fell -7.57% on the session but its 30-day range position sits at 65%, and AVAX fell -4.14% yet closed at 82% of its range. The session decline was steep intraday, but for many pairs it arrived from a position of relative 30-day strength.

At the other end, HBAR (-6.91%) and DOT (-6.97%) closed at 35% and 49% of their respective 30-day ranges — pairs that were already in the lower half of their recent ranges before the session added further pressure. XLM's session change of -5.55% landed it at 43% of its range, consistent with a 7-day change of -11.56% that had already been compressing its position. Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest pair — was 13.26 percentage points, a wide spread for a single session.

Regime and What Distinguishes It

A broad-decline label is applied when the overwhelming majority of the tracked set closes lower in the same session. With 19 of 20 pairs negative on 2026-10-07, the session clears that threshold without ambiguity. This is distinct from a mixed session, where gains and losses are roughly balanced across the set, and from a compressed session, where breadth may be similarly skewed but the magnitude of moves is small enough that the median change is close to zero.

What makes this session's broad-decline classification notable is the combination of high breadth (near-unanimous selling) and wide dispersion (13.26 percentage points). A compressed session can also show near-unanimous direction, but the moves are too small to generate that spread. Here, the median of -4.59% and the IMX low of -8.05% both confirm that magnitude accompanied the breadth. A dispersed session, by contrast, tends to feature large moves in both directions simultaneously; this session had a large move in only one direction, with NEAR's +5.21% standing alone against the field.

The 30-day range positions add a layer of context. Several of the harder-hit pairs on the day — IMX, APT, AVAX, STX — carried 30-day gains of +32.40%, +19.25%, +37.75%, and +33.71% respectively, and their range positions (68%, 65%, 82%, 77%) reflect that prior run-up. Pairs with more modest 30-day gains, such as BTC (+5.29%, range position 67%) and ETH (+3.34%, range position 48%), saw smaller session losses of -2.65% and -4.61% respectively. That pattern — larger prior gains correlating loosely with larger session losses — describes the internal structure of this particular broad-decline, though a single session is far too small a sample to treat that as a rule.

Execution Cost in This Kind of Tape

When the median session move is -4.59% and the weakest pair moves -8.05%, the round-trip transaction cost — maker-taker spread plus any applicable fee — becomes a proportionally smaller fraction of the observed price movement than it would be on a compressed day where moves are measured in fractions of a percent. On Coinbase Exchange, published spot trading fees for standard accounts run up to 0.60% per side (1.20% round-trip) at low volume tiers, falling to lower basis points at higher tiers. Against a -4.59% median move, a 1.20% round-trip represents roughly 26 basis points of the move's absolute magnitude — meaningful, but not the dominant variable in a session of this size.

That arithmetic changes significantly for pairs near the tight end of the move distribution. BTC's session change of -2.65% is the smallest loss in the set; a round-trip fee at a standard retail tier consumes a larger share of that move than it does for pairs that fell four to eight percent. Slippage is a separate consideration: broad-decline sessions with high dispersion can produce thinner order books on the bid side, particularly for smaller-cap pairs, widening the effective spread beyond the posted fee schedule. The table does not show volume or bid-ask data, so the magnitude of that effect on 2026-10-07 cannot be quantified from the available figures alone.

Strategies that clear transaction costs through holding period — entering before a multi-day move and exiting after — face a different arithmetic than those relying on frequency or size. A session like this one, arriving after 30-day gains of +131.25% for NEAR or +37.75% for AVAX, illustrates that the holding-period path to clearing fees is not frictionless: the cost basis is paid once, but the exit price on any given day is determined by conditions that include sessions exactly like this one.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-decline label describes what happened on 2026-10-07; it does not characterise the sessions before it or after it, and the classification system carries no predictive content. Broad-decline sessions have been followed by broad-advance sessions, by further broad-decline sessions, and by mixed or compressed sessions — the label is a description of a closed tape, not a signal about an open one.

The dispersion figure of 13.26 percentage points is wide, but width of dispersion in one session says nothing about whether dispersion will persist, compress, or reverse. NEAR's +5.21% made it the sole gainer in a field of 19 decliners; that distinction reflects what the session produced, not any durable property of the asset. Similarly, IMX's position as the weakest pair at -8.05% is a fact about 2026-10-07, not a characterisation of IMX's behaviour across sessions.

The 30-day figures in the table span a period that includes many sessions this piece does not examine. NEAR's 30-day change of +131.25% and IMX's 30-day change of +32.40% are the cumulative result of a sequence of daily closes, most of which are not visible here. Drawing conclusions about the relationship between 30-day performance and single-session behaviour from one data point would be a structural error in reasoning, not a matter of degree. The session read documents what closed; it does not model what follows.

The 2026-10-07 session closed with 19 of 20 pairs lower, a median decline of -4.59%, and a dispersion of 13.26 percentage points between NEAR's +5.21% and IMX's -8.05% — a wide, nearly unanimous tape whose internal structure is recorded here and whose implications for future sessions remain, as always, outside the scope of a single day's data.
