Session Read 2026-10-04: 16 of 20 Pairs Higher

This post covers the daily session that closed on 2026-10-04 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session is complete; the figures below are final open-to-close records, not live prices.

The session carried a broad-advance regime label, meaning the majority of the tracked pairs closed higher and the move was distributed across the field rather than concentrated in one or two names. What that label describes, and what it cannot tell us, is the subject of the sections that follow.

What the Session Did

Sixteen of the 20 pairs closed higher on 2026-10-04. The median session change was +1.77%, meaning half the field moved more than that and half moved less — a figure that sits well above the typical maker-taker spread on liquid pairs and is therefore a meaningful signal of broad participation rather than a handful of outliers pulling the average up.

FET was the session's strongest mover at +11.86%, closing at 94% of its own 30-day range — near the top of the range it has traded across the past month. ADA followed at +6.51%, also positioned high in its 30-day range at 89%. At the other end, OP closed at -1.40%, the weakest of the 20, though it still sat at 72% of its 30-day range, indicating it had already been trading in elevated territory before the session opened.

Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest pair — was 13.25 percentage points (FET's +11.86% minus OP's -1.40%). That is a wide spread across a single session. The full table shows where each pair's close sat inside its own 30-day range; several pairs, including BTC at 93% and STX at 87%, closed near the upper end of their individual ranges on the 4th.

Notably, NEAR carried the largest 30-day gain in the set at +126.14%, while its session move on the 4th was a comparatively modest +1.79%. FET's 30-day figure of +63.01% placed it among the stronger medium-term performers in the group, and its single-session move of +11.86% extended that run sharply on this particular day.

Regime Context: What Broad-Advance Describes

The broad-advance label is applied when a clear majority of the tracked pairs close higher and the gains are distributed across the field rather than isolated. On 2026-10-04, 16 of 20 closing higher with a median of +1.77% satisfied both criteria. The label is descriptive of the session that closed on that date; it carries no implication about the session that follows.

A broad-advance session differs from a dispersed session, where a wide gap between winners and losers dominates the picture even if the majority closes up. Here, the 13.25-point dispersion is notable but the breadth is the more defining feature — most pairs moved in the same direction, and the median move was positive and material. It also differs from a compressed session, where most pairs close near flat regardless of direction. The 2026-10-04 session showed neither flatness nor narrow participation.

Several pairs showed divergence between their 7-day and session figures. NEAR gained +1.79% on the session while sitting -8.67% over the prior seven days; OP lost -1.40% on the session and was -10.08% over seven days. These divergences are features of the data, not anomalies to be resolved — the session and the rolling window measure different things over different periods.

Cost of Involvement on a Session Like This

On Coinbase Exchange, standard taker fees for most retail tiers run in the range of 0.40% to 0.60% per side as of the current published fee schedule, producing a round-trip cost in the range of 0.80% to 1.20% before spread and slippage are added. Maker rebates reduce that figure for resting orders that are filled, but execution is not guaranteed for limit orders in fast-moving conditions.

Against a median session move of +1.77% on 2026-10-04, a round-trip taker cost of roughly 1.00% would consume a meaningful fraction — on the order of half or more — of a position sized to capture the median move. For pairs near the median, the cost is a large share of the available move. For FET at +11.86%, the same round-trip cost is a much smaller fraction of the gross move, which illustrates how dispersion affects the economics of execution: the cost is fixed in percentage terms, but the move it must clear varies substantially across the field.

Slippage on less liquid pairs widens the effective round-trip further. Pairs with thinner order books can see the execution price diverge from the mid-price at the moment of entry, particularly when a session is moving quickly. The range-position figures in the table reflect where the close landed, not the path taken to get there; a session that closed at 94% of its 30-day range (as FET did) may have involved intraday volatility that made execution costs unpredictable during the move itself.

What One Session Does Not Establish

A single session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label describes what happened on 2026-10-04; it does not describe a trend, a turning point, or a condition likely to persist. Sixteen of 20 closing higher is a fact about that day. It is not evidence that the ratio will hold over the next session, the next week, or any other period.

The regime classification is a label applied after the session closes. It is computed from the session's own data and cannot incorporate information about what follows. A sequence of broad-advance sessions would be a different observation — one session is not a sequence.

FET's +11.86% session gain, set against a 30-day gain of +63.01%, describes a pair that has moved substantially over the past month and moved sharply on this particular day. Whether that 30-day run reflects a durable shift in the pair's trading range or a temporary condition is not determinable from the data here. Range position figures describe where the close sat inside a historical window; they do not indicate where the range boundary will be at any future date.

Similarly, pairs that closed near the bottom of the session's rankings — OP at -1.40%, AVAX at -0.26%, APT at -0.29% — closed lower on a day when most pairs closed higher. That divergence is a feature of the session's dispersion. It does not identify those pairs as structurally different from the rest of the field, nor does it indicate anything about their behaviour in subsequent sessions.

The 2026-10-04 session closed with the broadest participation in a single-day advance that the 20-pair set can show — 16 of 20 higher, a median of +1.77%, and a dispersion of 13.25 percentage points driven primarily by FET's outsized move at the top of the field.
