Session Read 2026-10-02: 3 of 20 Pairs Higher
This piece covers the completed daily session of 2026-10-02 across 20 USD-quoted crypto pairs sourced from Coinbase Exchange daily candles. The session closed before this post was published; the figures below describe what happened, not what is happening.
The session carried a broad-decline regime label. That label is a description of the session that closed — it says nothing about the session that follows.

What the Session Did
On 2026-10-02, only 3 of the 20 tracked pairs closed higher. The median session change across the field was -1.04%. IMX was the strongest pair at +4.90% on the session, and FET was the weakest at -5.11%. The spread between those two — the dispersion figure — was 10.01 percentage points, which is wide enough that the session was not simply a uniform selloff; the losses were unevenly distributed.
Range position, which records where each pair's close sat inside its own 30-day high-to-low range (0% at the 30-day low, 100% at the 30-day high), showed most pairs still holding in the upper half of their recent ranges despite the session's losses. The table shows range positions clustered between roughly 52% and 79% for the majority of pairs, with ATOM as a notable outlier at 34%. NEAR carried the largest 30-day gain in the set at +148.92%, yet still closed the session down -2.52%.
Among the three pairs that finished higher, IMX's +4.90% session gain stood apart from the other two advancers — APT at +2.37% and SOL at barely positive at +0.22%. The full pair-by-pair figures are in the accompanying table.

Regime and What Distinguishes It
A broad-decline label is applied when the majority of pairs close lower and the breadth count is low. Here, 17 of 20 pairs declined — a breadth reading of 3 out of 20. That distinguishes this session from a mixed regime, where advancers and decliners are more evenly split, and from a compressed regime, where moves across the field are small and clustered tightly around zero regardless of direction.
The 10.01-percentage-point dispersion figure is also relevant to the classification. A broad decline with high dispersion means the losses were not uniform — some pairs fell sharply while a small number moved meaningfully higher. This is different from a broad decline where all pairs move in a narrow band together. The combination of low breadth and elevated dispersion characterised this particular session on this particular date.
The regime label describes the session that closed on 2026-10-02. It is a classification of a completed observation, not a characterisation of an ongoing condition.
What These Conditions Mean for Execution Cost
On a session where the median move was -1.04% and the weakest pair moved -5.11%, the relationship between round-trip trading costs and the size of available moves varies considerably depending on which pair is considered. Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule; at standard retail taker rates, a round-trip (one buy, one sell) carries a fee in the range of roughly 0.50% to 1.20% of notional value depending on the fee tier, before any spread or slippage is counted.
Against a median session move of -1.04%, a round-trip fee of that magnitude represents a large fraction of the gross move — meaning that for pairs near the median, execution cost alone would have consumed most or all of the session's price change. For pairs at the extremes — IMX at +4.90% or FET at -5.11% — the gross move was large enough that fees represented a smaller proportional share, though slippage in thinner books can widen the effective cost further.
Sessions with high dispersion tend to concentrate the cost-efficiency question: the moves that are large enough to clear fees were few, and they were not evenly distributed across the field. Nothing in the session data indicates which pairs would have been accessible at quoted prices throughout the session.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-decline label on 2026-10-02 describes what 20 pairs did on that date; it does not establish a trend, confirm a pattern, or indicate what the following session will look like. Regime labels are descriptive categories applied after the fact — the label cannot be known until the session closes, and it carries no predictive content about the next label.
The range-position figures show where pairs closed relative to their own 30-day ranges on this date. A high range position — for example, SOL at 78% or IMX at 79% — records that the close was near the upper end of the recent range. It does not indicate that the range will hold, expand, or reverse. Range position is a location measurement, not a signal.
The 30-day figures in the table — some of them large, such as NEAR's +148.92% or AVAX's +50.20% — describe cumulative price change over the 30 days ending on 2026-10-02. They are historical measurements of a period that has closed. They say nothing about the 30 days that follow. The structural limitation of every figure in this post is the same: it describes a session that has already ended.
The 2026-10-02 session closed with 17 of 20 pairs lower, a median decline of -1.04%, and a 10.01-percentage-point gap between the strongest and weakest pair — a broad decline with enough internal dispersion to make the day something other than a uniform move.
