Session Read 2026-09-18: 20 of 20 Pairs Higher
This piece covers the Coinbase Exchange daily session that closed on 2026-09-18, drawn from 20 USD-quoted crypto spot pairs. The table rendered alongside this post lists each pair's close, its open-to-close session change, its 7-day and 30-day changes, and where the close sat inside the pair's own 30-day high-low range.
The regime label assigned to this session is broad-advance. That label describes what the closed candles recorded; it carries no implication about the session that follows.

What the Session Recorded
Every one of the 20 pairs in the tracked universe closed higher on 2026-09-18, giving a breadth reading of 20 out of 20. The median session change across the field was +7.92%. That figure sits well above the kind of move that a standard maker-taker fee schedule would consume on a single round trip, a point returned to in the cost section.
APT led the session at +22.46%, closing 93% of the way up its own 30-day range. NEAR and OP followed closely at +19.66% and +19.51% respectively, with NEAR also registering a 30-day change of +117.48% — the largest trailing-month figure in the set. At the other end, DOT closed the session at +5.14%, the weakest performer, though still 70% up its 30-day range. Dispersion — the gap between the strongest and weakest session moves — was 17.32 percentage points.
Range-position readings tell a complementary story. The table shows the majority of pairs closing in the upper half of their 30-day ranges, with several — including NEAR, SOL, APT, and OP — sitting above 90%. A handful of pairs, among them ADA, ATOM, XRP, DOGE, HBAR, SHIB, and XLM, closed between 47% and 56% of their 30-day ranges despite posting session gains of roughly +6% to +11%, indicating that their 30-day windows contain higher prices than the 2026-09-18 close.

Regime Characteristics and Neighbouring Labels
A broad-advance label is applied when the breadth reading is at or near its ceiling and the median session change is materially positive. The 2026-09-18 session sits at the most extreme end of that definition: perfect breadth and a median of +7.92% leave no ambiguity about the classification.
The neighbouring regime labels help clarify what this session was not. A mixed session would show breadth somewhere in the middle of the range with no clear directional tilt. A compressed session would show most pairs moving within a narrow band regardless of direction. A dispersed session would show wide spread between gainers and losers without a dominant directional bias. The 2026-09-18 session differs from all three: the directional uniformity is near-total, and while dispersion at 17.32 percentage points is notable, it sits on top of a floor of +5.14% — every pair contributed to the advance.
The distinction between broad-advance and a mere cluster of large individual moves matters for how the session is read structurally. When the weakest pair in a 20-pair universe still gains more than +5%, the session-level signal is about the field rather than about any individual asset's idiosyncratic behaviour.
Execution Cost in Context
Coinbase Exchange publishes a tiered maker-taker fee schedule. At the lowest volume tiers, taker fees run at 0.60% per side, producing a round-trip cost of approximately 1.20% of notional before spread and slippage. Even at the tightest published tiers, a round trip carries a non-trivial basis-point cost that is only rendered small relative to the moves recorded on 2026-09-18.
The median session move of +7.92% is roughly six to seven times a standard retail round-trip fee at the lowest tier. The weakest session move, DOT at +5.14%, still represents approximately four times that same round-trip floor. In sessions where moves are of this magnitude, the fee component becomes a smaller fraction of the gross move than it would be in a compressed or flat session — not because the fee changes, but because the denominator grows. Slippage is a separate consideration: in a broad advance with elevated volatility, market-order fills on thinly traded pairs may widen effective costs beyond the published schedule.
The 30-day figures for several pairs — NEAR at +117.48%, STX at +121.34% — suggest that the holding-period route to clearing fees has been available over the trailing month, though a single session provides no basis for characterising what that period looked like day to day.
What One Session Does Not Establish
A single daily session is a sample of one. The broad-advance label describes the structure of 2026-09-18's closed candles; it is not a classification of a trend, a cycle phase, or a regime that persists into subsequent sessions. Nothing in the breadth reading, the median, or the dispersion figure indicates what the next session will record.
Perfect breadth — 20 of 20 pairs higher — is a descriptive fact about one day. Historically, sessions with near-perfect breadth have been followed by sessions of every regime type. The label itself cannot make anything true about what follows because it is computed only after the session closes.
The range-position column shows where pairs closed inside their own 30-day windows, not where they stand relative to any forward reference. A pair closing at 93% of its 30-day range has simply closed near the top of a window that is already in the past. That figure describes position; it does not describe momentum, resistance, or probability of any subsequent move.
The structural failure of any analysis built on a single broad-advance session is the absence of a second data point. One observation cannot establish a base rate, cannot confirm a pattern, and cannot distinguish a durable shift in market conditions from a single large daily move that reverts the following session.
The 2026-09-18 session closed with uniform positive breadth and a median gain that dwarfed standard round-trip costs, producing one of the more unambiguous broad-advance readings the 20-pair universe can generate — and, as with any single session, nothing more than that.
